Good coffee, good environment, super friendly staff. I really enjoyed this place. I have missed it for years somehow, but it was nice to find a coffee shop with decent coffee open late. It is a very Portland aesthetic. I recommend them.
I love the fact that coming into here there is so much to take in and look at. This local cafe has local ads hung up, business cards on a few counters and I love that. It gives such a communal feeling. The art is tasteful, the place is welcoming, clean and the service is good too. I enjoy the vibe of this place and their spicy dirty chai is perfect 👌 This is definitely a gem I’ve found hidden in Portland 😊 yay!
Great coffee shop, food and crew! Their panini sandwiches are fantastic.
Behind the coffee shop is the Back Door Theater . We went to an opening night of a great local show , in the pictures . We picked up some great organic drinks from the coffee shop . The shop has a great vibe , with great coffee choices and friendly locals sitting around the living room style front area . I will definitely return for coffee.
Stopped in on our way out of town while visiting from Delaware. What a truly exceptional coffee establishment! Everything from the lattes, to the breakfast sandwiches, to the cookies was truly excellent! If we lived here we would be here all the time!
Perfect neighborhood cafe. Great coffee, pastries and food! Staff is always friendly and quick with orders even when the place is full. Love the casual comfy vibe, none of that overly modern white on white aesthetic. One thing to improve is it could be kept cleaner! Needs a good deep clean as well.
The young man working was spectacular. He was so kind and understanding. We called ahead to order and he kept the food side open for us to get something to eat. Thoughtful with our drinks and customer service was spot on.
I haven't been to Common Grounds in years. It's the first coffeehouse I visited when I moved to Portland in 2002. I like that there are tables, comfy chairs, and window seating. I got a latte yesterday but looks like a great selection of pastries as well as breakfast, brunch, and lunch menu items. There aren't many coffee places open after 5pm or 6pm anymore. I will certainly be coming down from NE/Alberta for daytime and evening coffee & food.
I also remember going to a few plays in Back Door Theater (behind the coffeehouse), put on by Defunkt Theatre Co when I was taking theater classes at PSU. I'm bummed to hear they've been on hiatus since the pandemic. :(
We order two lattes with alternative milks. They were delicious. The place is funk and entertaining. A great spot to read or work on your computer. A+
best coffee shop in pdx. serious olde portland vibes. delicious homemade baked goods. chocolate chip cookies are extremely delicious. really a lot of hummus and avocado with every veggie plate. comfortable couches and chairs. friendly service and people are happy. 10+/10
The mocha was so smooth and sweet chai was delicious!
Common Grounds has been such an amazing coffee shop to me the several times I traveled through Portland. Now that I moved to Portland I frequently come here...like literally every day most weeks. If you want the most chill, laid back, yummy coffee having space go to Common Grounds. My pockets thank me for coming here and getting a pot of coffee for under $4 instead of just once cup which lets be honest-is never enough. I come here and pop my headphones in and work for hours. The staff are always nice and helpful and never judge me for being there longer than most people. They even have outside seating and dog treats. They also have super comfy green couches to relax on. So whether you came to work or relax Common Grounds has your back! 🐶❤✌
I’ve been known to go out of my way for their toasted bagels and cream cheese and coffee if I’m in the area in the AM which is rare. It’s hard to find good bagels and coffee these days. I suggest trying that combo here.
The art of the coffee house can often feel lost with a Starbucks on every corner (thought less so lately, thankfully), but fear not - you can step back into the 90s in all their glory at Common Grounds. With ample, comfortable seating and open late (9pm!) this place is perfect whether you're a poet, a student or someone just looking to have the best vegan banana bread of your life.
Seriously, this banana bread tastes like the now defunct vegan cafe from college that once scolded me for bringing in a ham sandwich - which I'm sorry, I should have known better as a writer for an underground socialist newspaper... but I was young, poor and really just love a good slab of banana bread.
Neighborhood coffee shop. Some gluten free option pastries. Take out window is a good thing. Gluten free Marion berry muffin. Gluten free chocolate chip cookie. 2 more offerings compared to nationwide Green Mermaid Cafes.
Perfect cafe to meet a friend or be creative or productive solo. Baked treats and coffee are excellent.
Great place to stop in for a latte and to get some work accomplished. Most of the time there are seats available, and if you’re lucky you’ll get a spot one one of the comfy couches. On warm days it’s fun to sit in the sun out front.
I have a history here...it's a long story. But if you're into coffee this is the joint. Recently stopped in an was happy to say the coffee did me right
