Dub's St Johns is a five star restaurant. What loosely describes African American cuisine, i. e. the descriptor soul food, is of the most difficult plate to prepare consistently. Transitional elements due to the many legions of restaurants that have attempted to market this brand makes successful recipes for these dishes both daunting and unpredictable. Cooking is all about the authentic and repeatable taste, and Dub's St John has found its niche.
My experience might be representative of what other customers encounter, and why that night the dining area was full. The menu reads the epicenter of what baby boomers expect: A robust list that include chicken, brisket, fish, and a rich cache of sides i. e. greens, cornbread, mac&cheese, sweet potatoes. The level of customer service equals that of the best dining houses in this emerging food capital city. Jovial and bright, the server set the tone. The time between order to kitchen, to table is naturally different then the fast food chain because each plate is individually prepared. Its why upon arrival of my dinner of catfish, greens, and mac&cheese passed the optical and smell test. The food is delicious. I will work through the menu, and word of mouth to friends and acquaintances that Dub's St Johns is a gem. My only complaint: I want some ox tails! I strongly urge you pitch this establishment for your business meetings and personal outings.
I went yesterday for the first time and I was impressed. The chicken and the catfish were seasoned to perfection. The bow tie & cheese was cheesy, flavorful, and delicious. But what stood out the most was the hospitality. The owner came to our table and introduced himself. He is very welcoming and humble. I highly recommend Dubs...you won’t be disappointed!
Dub's is a great place, love the new location. But you will run out of space there now that the neighborhood will see what great food you have!! Had the fried chicken dinner, best chicken in North Portland.
