We arrived at 7:30am upon them opening. Staff was very helpful and a regular pointed us in a great decision. A freshly boiled salt bagel with "mama-lil's" pepper cream cheese. We also ordered a sandwich with prosciutto and arugula. Bagels we're fresh and chewy with a little crunch. So good! The location is tiny and I can see it being very difficult to navigate. But from initial visit, I'd say worth it.
There isn't much that Portlanders love more than standing in line, and Bernstein's is currently our best bet for indulging in some hot hot standing in line love in deep St. Johns. Go now. Or tomorrow morning, anyway. Secluded patio in back. Don't tell anyone.
Great and very fresh bagels 🥯! Good ingredients.
Nice outdoor seating
Delicious bagels! I wouldn’t go So Far to say they are the BEST bagels in Portland... there’s just to many options to choose one bagel shop over another.. but the bagels were very good and so was their homemade cream cheese.. though I wish they had more flavor choices. The bagel selection also appeared to be a bit limited around 8am... which is the time you would think they’d have plenty. The coffee options were drip only, but good coffee. The interior space is very compact. I’d recommend checking out their back courtyard space, there’s a lovely mural. Or sitting out front on the sidewalk, if you are lucky enough to grab a spot. Definitely a good little hole in the wall bagel shop and will be back when in the area.
The bagels are second to none. By far the best in Portland. And the cream cheese, holy cow, it’s incredible! The staff are always nice. They do run out of bagels early most days so get there before 11.
So I'll be honest , we never intended to visit this place. We went looking for a restaurant, but it was closed so we tried Bernstein's Bagels. Holy cow(!), It ruled. Sooooo tasty. The staff were very friendly and aided in our selection of bagels. Vegan cream cheese with some peppery kick on their salted bagel...heaven (if you believe in that sort of place).
Even had a few bagels non toasted , and no smears, still delicious. We don't even live near this place, but my partner and I have made the commitment to visit every time were driving through Portland.
Do yourself a favor and go get a bagel from these fine folks.
Excellent bagels, but make sure you come in early because they go fast. I've tried a three of their bagel sandwiches over a few visits, and they were all delicious. The sandwiches are a bit on the pricy side, but they give you plenty of quality toppings for the price.
If you plan to eat at the shop, be prepared for the weather. They've got a very cool covered patio that serves as the seating area, in the spring/summer it will be a fantastic place to enjoy a bagel and some coffee.
Overall, Bernstein's is a great spot. If you're tired of Safeway's baked bagels, this is a great place to scratch that boiled bagel itch.
Authentically good bagels. Many of the bagels I'd had in Portland were always missing something. I speculate that many weren't boiled first. Bernstein's was a definitive cut above the rest, doling out exceptional bagels every day. When they're all out, they're all out.
Don't miss the schmears, too. They load your bagel up thick, and it is delicious.
I'm a bagel fanatic and always on the quest for the perfect bagel. Since Tastebud stopped making them I was struggling with the lack of any decent bagel in this city. Recently my friend found Bernstein's and brought me one right away. I was thrilled! The poppy seed bagel was the perfect texture with ample amount of seeds. I went to their store a couple days later and had veggies with a chive, lemon smear on an everything bagel and it made my heart sing. Thank you, Bernstein Bagels, for making real bagels in a town where they were much needed. From home to the shop is 13miles for me. It's worth the commute!!!
We stayed in Jantzen, Oregon and discovered this little gem online! We had a plain bagel lightly toasted with cream cheese. The bagels are crunchy on the outside and wonderfully soft and chewy on the inside like a good New York bagel should taste! They make the bagels right in front of you, but when they run out, they close so get there early! The people are very friendly! We ate there three times and wish Bernstein’s Bagels are where we live!
High quality ingredients, the bagel dough is very good and taste homemade. The staff is friendly, environment inviting, and has nice little outdoor area for summer time. The downside is their bagel favors are very limiting. They are all seeds, spices, or plain. If you are looking for a sweet bagel, blueberry, or cheese, they are not the place to go. Recommendation: make cinnamon/sugar, honey, or fruity bagels!
The best bagels in Portland. Cheap and delicious breakfast bagels with homemade Spreads. I’m a fan of the pumpernickel and everything bagel. They don’t do any sweet flavored bagels if you’re looking for that though.
Great breakfast bagel, not your standard style (this one has cream cheese, arugula, prosciutto, and egg). The bagel had a lovely crust and chewy inside. There were a couple others I have yet to try, as well as some nice house made cream cheeses. There's a lovely patio area out back that is mostly shaded.
The best bagels in Portland. They are chewy, flavorful, and come with a heaping portion of cream cheese. Try the prosciutto bagel sandwich for a real treat. The staff is incredibly friendly and seem to always be having a great time. Bonus: very impressive everything bagel themed wall paper.
Moved here from New York 25 years ago and kinda gave up on Portland bagels. These bagels are the REAL DEAL. They stay open until they run out (like any self respecting real bagel store in NYC area) so go before noon on the weekends. So happy I wandered in!
Fantastic bagel and even better cream cheese. Best bagel I’ve had in Portland, hands down. The staff was so friendly too, letting me taste some things. Live about 20 minutes away, and it’s well worth the drive.
Best bagels in Portland. Just remember to order your bagel with a light dabbing of cream cheese, or you'll find your bagel crushed under schmeer. Go early or be prepared for a wait, or worse yet... They might have run out!
These bagels are amazing. Hands down best bagels I have had in portland. I bought one lox bagel. Left. Then came back twenty minutes later to get another sandwich. I have a sneaky suspicion I will be back often.
