Reviews Legislative Cafeteria

I went there when the legislature wasn't in session, so it was deserted and I had the place to myself. There are many people that dislike this building, perhaps because its features seem so unusual and it looks stuck in 1964. However, if you look in an objective way, many of geometrical elements (roof panels , column supports) are arguably more timeless. If you take away the light fixtures, especially the giant brass chandeliers that are part wagon wheel and part food service heat lamp, there is a clean feel with warm golden tones. Outside the front entrance is a mosaic of the NC state seal, which also has warm beige and gold. I like the quirkiness of the building, but then there's that red carpet. I guess its supposed to evoke some regal, parliamentary feel, but I think it's completely out of place. I don't care for it, but someone thinks the carpet is pretty special because the grand staircase, with its cascade of plush red, is off-limits to the citizens of the state. No matter what you feel about the building: crazy, hideous, charmingly retro, super cool or whatever ... as a citizen of this state, I think its important to see this building firsthand. You see video of it all the time on the news, but being there yourself is really different. stuff I found when searching the history of the building: The architect that designed the NC legislative building also design the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts in D.C.

The building provides a modern atmosphere for housing the NC General Assembly and visitors. The building houses legislature offices, meeting rooms, restrooms, large indoor public spaces for lunch and gatherings, grand staircase for special occasions. There are two chambers: one for the Senate and one for the House of Representatives. The top floor has gallery access for those who wish to view the assemblies. A museum is located on the top floor as well as access to the outdoor rooftop available for lunch and gatherings along with a beautiful view of the downtown Raleigh skyline due south.
