Love the food and atmosphere! It’s buffet style so you can help yourself to a large assortment.

I had a plate from Chef Mamusu’s during the Folk Festival and it was so delicious. Having good food at a festival is an elite experience - it was raining hard and I wanted hot food and the booth smelled so good!! I got the plate of two meats and two sides and got the curry fried chicken wing, curry fried fish, candied yams and sweet cornbread. Everything was delicious and hot and the chicken and fish were both real stars of the show. I haven’t been to the brick and mortar restaurant in a while but now I’ll be going out of my way to go back soon!

Absolutely delicious!! Friendly service. Visited on Tuesday and made another trip the next day......drove almost an hour. My husband enjoyed the vegetarian choices since he doesn't eat meat. Some of the choices were greens, jollof rice, yams, cabbage, yummy plantains, Mac & Cheese and more.... everything was perfectly seasoned....I tried fish and meatballs which was really good. The pineapple ginger tea was treat...made me feel overall blessed in Spirit. The place promoted cleanliness. Overall we had a good experience! Yummy!

No actually what I expected but I was quite please with the selections of food and the cleanliness of the serving areas. It’s required to sanitize when entering but not every time you go back in to the self-serving area. Let’s be clear this is not an AYCE Buffet. This is a cafeteria that weighs your food at $9 a lb. Which is barely enough to stave off hunger for more of it’s 200lb plus guests. This place is very expensive and mostly worth it. I would expect more in the ambiance of the restaurant but we are greeted with nothing authentic other than the food. Some of the drinks were not traditional African drinks. As one attendant mentioned… well we needed another juice. 😂 Hilarious. So you will find Jamaican Sorrel and a few other American pallet prepared drinks. All in all this would have been a 5 star experience if the food was less expensive (giving the chance to sample more) and the ambiance was more culturally appealing. Music would have been nice and maybe a greeting or two in the native tongue. It would be nice to feel as if you have been whisked away for an hour. Give me a reason to come back especially being near the VCU campus. We expected a more budget friendly experience. This place is Expensive!!!

This is, hands down, my favorite spot in Richmond. They have a rotating menu for each day of the week, and there is genuinely nothing I haven't loved yet. They have SO MANY vegan options! I go every Tuesday after my class, and its hard not to get some of everything lol 100% you've gotta try this -- especially if you've never been to an African restaurant. The atmosphere is very welcoming, and it's a great place to try a bunch of dishes and learn what you love!

First time visit and will not be the last time. I went with my son and we had a great time. From the beverages to the food to the music. Every moment felt like home. I love a good scratch restaurant!!! We were accommodated greatly. We were introduced to the buffet and we ordered Egusi with goat, mother Africa told us it was a more traditional African dish. There was a bottle of sanitizer for all patrons to use prior to starting at the buffet. The music was not too loud, we were able to speak to one another without yelling. It didn’t feel like we were at a restaurant, it felt like home. It was peaceful and welcoming. I dance back and forth with vegan dishes and this restaurant has these as well. I loved the beverage choices. I had guava, they also have mango lemonade and pineapple ginger juice, African fruit punch and others I cant recall. They also have desserts, we had carrot cake which was simply fresh and amazing ‼️Please visit soon ❤️ With love Very satisfied, Sara

Bangin. Great vegan/vegetarian options. Only issue I had was the styrofoam plates. Buffet is charged by weight. Nice lady at the counter said if I brought my own bowl she could take the weight of it before I load up with food and subtract it from my total. So five stars all around

Chef mamasus cooked casual lunch spot, pay by weight buffet style African and Caribbean food. 6.50 a pound. Liked that it has quite a few options, do have few items for veggie lovers as well. Overall cleanly maintained, but dishes have little extra oil, which i am not a big fan of.

My wife and I tried this place for the first time. It was nice to sit in a place that is a true neighborhood restaurant. I can't speak to the actual authenticity of the food, but it was certainly different than the surrounding restaurants. We tried everything.... Ox Tail, chicken livers, Curry chicken, jerk chicken, fish, all the veggie varieties, rice... The flavors were amazing. Even things that I thought would be familiar, like red beans and rice, had a unique flavor. It is a lunch buffet place, so the formalities are minimal. If I worked within walking distance, it would probably be in the lunch rotation.

No complaints about almost everything: only the trout, which was dry, cold and not crispy. The mustard chicken is best over curry rice, not white rice, and though it's not for everyone I really enjoyed it. Would absolutely recommend the jollof. The sweet cornbread is almost cake-sweet, which I don't usually prefer, but after all the spicy food it helped rebalance my palate. Everything was clean and I had no problems dining in. And, wonder of wonders, a non-chain restaurant playing music at a volume high enough to hear it but low enough to talk over! Lovely.

I found Africanne on Main last week. It's just a few blocks from where I work. I was looking for a primarily vegetable option for lunch. Their menu includes meat options as well. It is a very small place almost hidden on the corner of 2nd & Main in downtown Richmond Virginia. I walked in not expecting what I saw and smelled. The dishes were piping hot at the buffet station. (You pay $6.99 per pound for take out.) I'm always a little leary of buffet stations, but to my surprise if neat and clean. Also, the food did not look as though it had been sitting for days and then reheated. Everything looked extremely fresh. My veggie only lunch went down there drain once I saw stewed chicken and fried lake trout that looked more than appealing. I ended up getting a small sample of the red beans and rice, jollof rice, stewed chicken, lake trout, and the MIXED GREENS (which are amazing). My to go container weighed .99 pounds and cozy $7.70 with tax, so not so bad. Everything is a little spicy, but pleasingly so... Definitely not obnoxiously so. I have tried to duplicate the mixed greens without the best off luck. At Africanne on Main, you'll find a string bean or green pea pop up on your fork seemingly from nowhere. At any rate, I would suggest it as a quick bite to eat. Not fancy, but definitely good. I'll at my before and after I ate pic! It's hilarious. I forgot to mention why I only have them four stars. It was purely for customer service reasons. No one greeted me and the second day I went, I waited at least five minutes for someone to come out of the back to give me a to go container. Don't expect a lot of warmth when you enter. There were no smiles and no "thank you for coming" when I left. Don't get meet wrong, no one was rude, I'm just accustomed to propietors being excited that they have customers.

Should have been done a review, I absolutely love this landmark. I just recently recommended a coworker that just moved to Richmond. She will be visiting this weekend. The only reason not a 5 star for service is every now and then depending on who is on the register may not be that inviting but that's really just nitpicking at this point.
