I visited their new location on E Grace street this morning, as it's a couple doors down from my apartment and it is hands down the best coffee shop I've been to in Richmond. The coffee is delicious (I had the oat milk latte) and the people and vibe are great too, with a lot of space to work if you need to. So glad this is so close, I'll definitely be a regular!
The coffee, food, and the atmosphere at this new Richmond cafe are amazing. The owners take great pride in providing the highest quality to their customers. This is some of the best coffee you'll find in Richmond. The building, an old firehouse, is a fun, comfortable place to hang out with friends- a great addition to the community!
I was first introduced to Ryan's coffee in Ireland, before Ironclad was even in the works. Because of the care that he takes during the roasting process to preserve the flavor of the coffee, I was disappointed with every coffee I tried after tasting his. I couldn't wait for my first shipment of Ironclad to arrive, and when it did, the coffee was just as good, and maybe even better, than what I remembered it being while I was in Ireland. I have now introduced it to my coworkers, and everyone agrees that Ironclad's coffee is some of the best around. Try it, and you won't be disappointed in your investment.
A coworker from VA. gifted me with a bag of Tolliver's Reserve and, by far, one of the best tasting coffees Ive ever had!!!
Having bought from several small roasters like Ironclad, I have to say this is the best coffee I have had. If you have questions, just contact Ryan and he will have the answers. Great guy. Great coffee.
Great coffee and even better service! Highly recommend you stop by if you're in town. If not you can order on the website!!
WOW , just had my first pot and WOW ,,,, Very good ,,, I'm recommending this to all my friends. The people at Ironclad are great , very friendly and very respectful. I messaged them and they responded in less than 10 min. I highly recommend them.

Very helpful people I'm brewing my first cup is smaller amazing and it is. Ask asked for an exceptional cup of joe and I found it! Thanks
The folks are Ironclad are the most friendly, passionate coffee roasters/aficionados I've yet to meet. I've learned so much about coffee from just hanging out at the shop. Hands down my favorite coffee and espresso in RVA.. Especially their cold brew.
Crazy neat atmosphere, awesome staff, and delicious product. Seriously a new RVA staple!

Really good coffee and lovely owners! I'm extra grateful for the stellar decaf beans for that evening coffee on the back porch :-)
I'm not a coffee drinker, BUT, I know a lot of people who are & some have tried Ironclad 's & love it! I will say the ordering process was easy, the packaging was great & it was personal. Everything I'd expect from a small business!!
Update: second day was even better. The raspberry Brie croissant was the BEST, as was the gigantic cinnamon roll. I also tried the butterscotch latte, which was unique and GOOD.
The coffee is unique and superb. I tried the ginger cookie latte. It was amazing.
Breakfast sandwich biscuits were delicious.
The ambiance is great. Fun place! I love their creative coffees.
Very inviting environment! Coffee was pretty good. We also got a cake (forgot what it was called) and it was delicious!!!
The frustrating part was that it took 30 mins for our coffee to be made. It was a busy cafe.. one person taking order and one making. They probably need more staff!!
If you want a truly crafted coffee made in a real espresso machine ironclad is your place. They’re specially coffees can be eight or $10 but they are using the finest ingredients and it usually comes with a little cookie today. I got a pumpkin latte with real pumpkinparking could be a pain if you don’t wanna pay has indoor and outdoor seating and is very cozy.
I went there twice for coffee. Got a flatwhite and a double espresso, and both were good. Didn't get a chance to try any of their baked goods or other stuff.
The place itself is really nice, and I can imagine hanging out there over a coffee with some friends. Service is very friendly and attentive.
I came into Ironclad on a Sunday late morning and was greeted by Brian who was a real gentleman. He guided me through the drink options skillfully and I chose to get the Hygge holiday special drink. It was spectacular. I also bought two bags of beans and was very satisfied with the service I got.
Folks, I visit coffee shops all over the world and let me tell you: not only is this my favorite coffee shop in Richmond. It’s one of my favorite coffee shops on the east coast. And the excellent baked goods simply add to that equation. Add in the fantastic charm of their location and you have yourself an unbelievable cafe. I am so glad I found this place and will be returning on my next trip to Richmond.
A few months back, we finally visited Ironclad Coffee Roasters in Shockoe Bottom. A beautiful red brick building, which looks to be an old firehouse, beckons you in. To the left as you enter is a piano and to the right, a line with menus and a display with t-shirts and locally made coffee scrubs for sale. In the center of this spacious room with a high ceiling is an island for the baristas to prepare your drinks. We were greeted quickly by an enthusiastic and friendly barista, and promptly placed our orders: one of the summer specials, the “Nero” Dark Chocolate Cookie Milk Latte, and an orange juice. I had no idea what a “Nero” was when I ordered this drink, but when I saw it, I knew I had made the right decision.
This Nero cookie was fresh baked, rich with decadent chocolate, and almonds. Had I not let it sit in the latte so long, it would have been even crisper along the edges. Baking this cookie perfectly brought its flavors and sweetness to life through careful caramelization. The milk latte was brewed and blended to perfection, with chocolate streaming down the insides of the glass. Because Ironclad steeps their milk overnight in luxurious dark chocolate, this creamy latte had a delightful fudgy flavor through and through. There was a nuttiness to the latte, which added a roundness and a richness to the flavor profile. This could be due to the roast of the beans, which I feel is a medium roast due to the balance of bitterness and warmth (it was not over roasted). Overall, this was the most indulgent latte I’ve had in a long time!
My husband opted for some freshly handcrafted orange juice by Natalie’s Orchid Island Juice Company. This juice was a sunny burst of citrus like you’ve never had at home - refreshingly sweet, cheerfully acidic, and thirst-quenching.
We really vibed with the relaxed ambiance at Ironclad. It was busy; there were four or five employees hurrying about, but they seemed to have great teamwork and a smooth operation. Soft music played in the background; old standards floated by with gentle lyrics and lilting horns. In the front, and along the right side of the building, are two outdoor seating areas for guests. Upstairs, there are four or five tables for guests to visit with each other or to work on their laptops with the free wifi.
In addition to their summer menu, Ironclad offers a variety of coffee drinks and teas. Some unusual offerings they have are a cortado, which is equal parts espresso and steamed milk, and a puntino, which is their name for a classic macchiato - espresso with just a little layer of frothed milk. Another interesting concoction is the Grimsby Fog, which combines lavender and sage white tea with housemade vanilla syrup and steamed milk.
This is your cue to take a trip to Ironclad to see what impressive items they may have on their fall menu! When you make your journey to Ironclad, don’t forget to check out the bagged coffees they have for sale, too - especially if you’re not coming through again soon!
Best treats and specialty drinks I've ever had and a wonderful atmosphere! It is a must-visit if you are anywhere near Richmond! I even was able to satisfy my 10-month-old, we highly recommend the coconut oatmeal!
Amazing atmosphere and vibes. Food is wonderful and although the line can get long, they take care of it fast and efficiently. Coffee was also great, with reasonable prices and great seasonal specials. Enjoyed my visit and would come again!
I had a Vermont sugar coffee. It was delicious. There was a wonderful wood fired aroma with ever sip. My son had an gingerbread cold coffee. He enjoyed it as well. Beautiful interior!
Stepping into Ironclad Coffee feels like being enveloped in warmth and authenticity. The rustic and cozy ambiance is exactly the kind of atmosphere I seek out when looking for the perfect coffee escape. The artistry and care that go into every cup are evident, with each sip being an experience of its own.
Even on their busiest days, when the line snakes out the door, the efficient team ensures that everyone is served promptly without compromising on the quality of their brews. And while their coffee is undoubtedly the star of the show, their pastries shouldn't be overlooked – they make for the ideal accompaniment to any beverage.
A personal highlight for me is their selection of single-origin coffees. I never leave without picking up a freshly roasted bag, often just a few days off the roaster. The commitment to freshness and quality is palpable.
For those seeking an authentic coffee experience combined with a warm and inviting setting, Ironclad Coffee is a must-visit in the world of specialty cafes. Highly recommended!
