Went today for the first time and let me tell you, it is only the first of *many* future visits. Excellent authentic food; I read in the Richmond Times Dispatch they grow many of their own ingredients and it absolutely shows. Quality is stellar for reasonable price! If you’re looking for incredible mexican street food, this is THE place.
My hubby and I discovered this delicious little restaurant/bodega while searching for a place to grab some lunch in Richmond.
OMG it was so good! Real authentic yummy Mexican food for a reasonable price. We both had the combo plate which includes your choice of 3 items and a canned soda for around $12.
I chose the chicken tamale, chicken flauta, and beef tostado. Hubby chose a shredded beef burrito, a shredded beef street taco, and a chicken tamale. The tamales are hand made onsite, unfortunately they were out of the red chile pork, but the chicken one was delicious.
The chicken flauta was actually the best flauta I have ever eaten. The tostada was loaded with mouth watering shredded beef, no cheap bland hamburger here. It was hands down the best Mexican food that I have had since moving to Virginia from Arizona. Although they did not serve chips and salsa, they had small containers of red, green, and a smoky adobo salsa, no strange white gloop at this restaurant. Although it wasn't fancy, it was clean, the employees were extremely welcoming, and the food was drool worthy.
I will definitely stop in the next time I am in the Richmond area!
We’ve been here 15+ times. It’s amazing Mexican food, especially the burritos. They are California/TexMex handheld style and packed. The salsa is made there and so good! Plus they are a market. Top marks all around!
If you're nearby, or not, just go here. Better than anything I've had in Cali! Wow!
We had an excellent meal at La Milpa tonight. I had a cheese quesadilla, we also tried a chorizo quesadilla and pulled chicken tacos. Everyone had beans and rice.
All of the dishes were delicious and the chicken had outstanding seasoning. The food was ready quickly despite the late hour. The portions were generous and we left very full. There was a decent selection of beer and sodas.
There’s also an attached market with a full range of Hispanic products and brands.
Really good Carne Asada (Grilled Steak) Burritos and Tacos. The Carne Asada Salad is good too! It reminds me of the Mexican food back where I am from (San Diego, CA) and some of the places I have been to in New Mexico.
This time I got the rice and beans on the side rather than in the California Burrito with Carne Asada (grilled steak, rice and beans, and cheese). I was a little bummed they didn't have guacamole (they do now), but it was still really good with sour cream! They also have a lot of different good hot sauces! I love the spicy red (it's kind of orangish) and spicy green (habanero, I think).
I recommend trying this place!
Update#1: The Shrimp Tacos are also not bad. Some of fam love the Shredded Beef Tacos (which are hard to find here) in Duro (hard) shell. My fam also likes the California Burrito. I prefer the rice and beans on the side (which aren't bad). I've asked them to make a California Burrito SoCal style once (French fries inside instead of rice and beans) and they did! It was good! I've also had the Carne Asada Burrito with chorizo, cheese, and egg to make a breakfast burrito. Also good!
You can't go wrong with this place!
Update #2: I tried something different today! I had the Quesabirra Tacos and Green Chicken Enchiladas. The Quesabirra Tacos were so good! They are petty much cheese quesadillas made with corn tortillas with marinated shredded beef. You have to order the meal to get the dipping sauce/soup (I think it's the juice the meat was marinated and the tacos were cooked in). The enchiladas were not bad. I prefer red sauce enchiladas, which I don't believe they have.
Update #3: We did DoorDash. We got a Mini Carne Asada Burrito, Quesabirra Tacos, and a shredded beef taco (flour shell). All was good. They forgot the soup that goes with the Quesabirra Tacos. Thankfully I saved it from last time and froze it. Still good. I also got their guacamole. That hit. It's a good amount of quacamole too.
Update #4: I did DoorDash again. I tried for the first time the Flauta Por Unidad with Pollo (a fat shredded chicken taquito) and the Duro with Cameron (hard shell shrimp taco). Both were good. I also got another Mini Carne Asada Burrito. I love their flour tortillas! The taste so fresh!
Update #5: DoorDash again. The food was so good, I wanted it two days in a row! I got a Mini Carne Asada Burrito again. This time they put the red sauce, onions, and cilantro on it (I was wondering what the red sauce in a container was for). It was good, I just couldn't pick it up to eat it and was more messy. I also got the Flauta Por Unidad with Res (giant taquito with shredded beef), a side of rice and beans, and tried a Sope (thick corn tortilla with beans, and lettuce, cheese) with Cameron (shrimp) for the first time. There was a lot (apart) of shrimp! All was good, but the Carne Asada flour tacos and burritos are still my favorite there.
Update #6: DoorDash again! Third time this week... it is crazy! I think this is the most Ist I've had them ever in a week or even a month! I also don't live that close so DoorDash is a good option.
I got the Mini Burrito with Carne Asada once again. It came with sauce on it again (like described on the menu). It was good, I just would prefer it without because the tortillas are so good, I want to really taste it. I wish they allowed comments/special instructions so we can request slight alterations.
I also tried their Quesadilla Harina Sola with Cameron (Cheese Quesadilla with Shrimp). It was very good. Again, I love flour tortillas! If they had an option to buy some I would (I have only seen corn on DoorDash).
I was a little bummed because I ordered extra hot sauce and didn't get it. I also wish they let you leave comments on DoorDash so I can request which hot sauces to send. Food is awesome, though!
I recently spoke to someone from the restaurant and they are passing my suggestions to the owner. Super stoked!
The only other thing that could make this place better is if they had fish tacos.
It's open 24/7 so that is amazing. You can get some authentic Mexican dishes here and the prices aren't that bad.
Go out and try something different.
You will not be disappointed. Enjoy
INCREDIBLE! literally the best Mexican food in all of Richmond. I highly recommend trying their mango juice, it's not super sweet like normal juices & that's exactly why I love it.
This was my first time at La Milpa. The person who assisted me at the counter was super kind. She also very quickly switched from Spanish to English for me 😅 I’m learning Spanish but I’m probably never going to be fluent (this is my own flaw).
I got a mini burrito, a tamal, large aguas frescas, and a desert for less than $20.
The food was delicious and affordable.
There is a little shop area when you walk in that is very well organized and clean.
What a cool little spot with the restaurant and market, felt very authentic. Absolutely loved the experience. Tacos were tasty, saupa was VERY good but a little disappointed in the burrito.
I went here with a class on culture and cultural heritage. The atmosphere was extremely authentic but welcoming, everyone was extremely friendly and open. The food was good, and not very expensive. I will absolutely be visiting again.
It’s an enjoyable place to eat. I have eaten their tacos Al pastor and shrimp burrito.
I find all of the items to be tasty, but every time we’ve ordered the shrimp burrito it’s been poorly rolled and packaged.
Authentic Mexican culture under one roof! Don't expect English or anything fancy. I've never been to Mexico, but everything in this over-crowded, indoor market, and restaurant made me feel like I could have been. The place is comfortably Mexican including shelved chips, cookies & sodas, chachkies, racked tabloids, even over-sized pinatas hanging overhead. And of course their food. I ordered the carne asada grilled steak and an all beef hard shelled taco. The shell was a little over cooked, but you could taste a hint of ground corn in it. Both were good w lime and their red sauce. This was my first time at La Jolla and really liked the experience.
Want an authentic latin taste? Then look no further. It's a combined restaurant convenience store, so they were essential during the pandemic. All of the latino staff is super friendly and cater to all nationalities... Everyone loves the menu, and lunch combos are so rewarding. A gem of a place, and always a pleasant dining and takeout experience.
Update:. 2022... Food and service just as amazing.... Such a great place to have a nice enjoyable lunch.
Moved to Richmond from Los Angeles and nothing I miss more than truly good Mexican food like La Milpa’s. I’m slightly worried/confused when I see totally Americanized “Mexican” restaurants in Richmond area getting higher reviews than a gem like La Milpa but people who know what’s up will be glad to discover the real deal.
