Our first visit to Chavas Mexican restaurant was a delightful experience. The service was prompt and friendly, and the food was fresh, flavorful, and cooked to perfection. We particularly enjoyed the beef and fried white fish, which were both hot and delicious. Our server was attentive and helpful, making our meal even more enjoyable. We will definitely be returning to Chavas soon!
A Burst of Authenticity in the Heart of St. Louis - Chava's Mexican Restaurant
Review:
⭐⭐⭐⭐
If you're looking for a vibrant splash of Mexican culture in the heart of St. Louis, Chava's Mexican Restaurant in Soulard is the place to be. The decor here is a festive homage to Mexico, with bright colors and art that set an inviting tone, bringing an authentic feel to your dining experience.
But what truly stands out is the food. With a lack of genuinely authentic Mexican cuisine in the area, Chava's serves as a beacon for those seeking a taste of the real deal. This isn't your run-of-the-mill, Americanized Mexican food that you might find elsewhere. Chava's offers a menu brimming with traditional dishes that reflect the rich culinary heritage of Mexico. I was unable to find specific dishes during my research, but the overall sentiment from many patrons is that Chava's offers a more faithful representation of Mexican cuisine.
As for service, it's just what you'd expect - efficient and straightforward. Nothing over the top, but certainly nothing to complain about either. They serve your food, refill your drinks, and let the dishes speak for themselves.
In conclusion, Chava's is a spot I'd happily revisit. If you're in downtown or metro St. Louis and have a hankering for some authentic Mexican food, this is your go-to place. It's a dining experience that's colorful, culturally-rich, and satisfyingly delicious.
Everyone at the table had the same reaction to the food, it was fantastic. Some of the best Mexican food I have ever eaten.
El Mireko- these little burritos were perfect. Lightly fried and delicious. 5/5
Loved loved loved everything! (but the rice was not my favorite) We had the chicken fajitas and chimichanga. The chips and salsa were great. They also have happy hour 4 to 6. The margaritas🍹 were made with real fruit 😋 so good. We tried pineapple, cherry 🍒, blueberry and he had orange 🍊. They do frozen or on the rocks and you can mix two flavors. Ok (pronounced oak) was fantastic. We took home the beef fried tacos for mom-in-law and she loved them too. We will definitely go back here.
Second time here and I enjoyed the service. I ordered the shrimp quesadilla and a strawberry margarita. Everything tasted delicious but I would say that they can cut back on the amount of cheese they use.
The menu seems more unique than a lot of typical Mexican places (for example, their beans are served with more solid bits rather than completely blended, the salsa has a smoky flavor, etc). Just small things that make it stand out. Staff were quick and friendly. It was very busy the night that we went but we were still seated quickly and food came out fast.
This is a neat little Mexican restaurant with a simple menu and quick, friendly service. 2 of the 3 meals we got were tasty. The vegetable quesadillas tasted sort of burnt and spoiled. The service was good. Got our food in about 15 to 20 minutes on an uncrowded Sunday. I would say Chava's is an average Mexican restaurant experience.
Chips and salsa were delivered just as we sat down . Water right after. Friendly staff went out of there way to serve us. Brought me a fried cheesecake burrito for my birthday no charge. Food was good price and really delicious. Ty
Had a perfect experience last night. Friends were in town with their first-grader and were looking for some Mexican food after a long day doing activities. The place was super cozy and had a lively but friendly crowd. We were able to sit down immediately, got our drinks quickly (the margaritas were great), and felt right at home. Our food was really good, and our server was amazing — friendly, always there when you needed him but not overbearing, accommodating of the kid… Will go back and recommend for sure.
Had the burrito and it was large and delicious . Sydney, our waitress, was great.
House margaritas were the best “house” version I have ever had. Not too acidic, not overwhelming. Just good.
They have their own parking lot, so you can park off street.
We will definitely be returning.
🍹Undoubtedly the best margarita in town! 🍹😍 It's a bustling spot, so expect a wait, but the fantastic drinks and vibrant atmosphere make it worth it. The food is absolutely spectacular - don't miss the BBQ quesadillas, they are a flavor explosion! 🌮🔥🤤 #BestMargarita #DeliciousFood #MustTryQuesadillas
We love this spot in Soulard for fantastic Mexican food! The service was so wonderful tonight - our waitress was so kind and helpful. We honestly didn’t have to ask once for a refill on chips and salsa and they made us feel so comfortable and kept us filled! The chips and salsa here are sooo good - the salsa is a bit on the spicier side but I love that!
We got the El Mireko and Fajitas Rancheros - both were delicious, 100% would get the El Mireko again! The chicken on the Fajitas was really good, had a nice char too - we just weren’t expecting it to be so soupy but the stew (?) it was in was really good! Very tomato-ey
Overall such a great local spot in Soulard!
Tried here for the first time today. I got fried (1 chicken & 1 beef) tacos and 1 soft steak taco. I’m 6 months pregnant so decided to try a mix. I prefer the soft steak taco. The beef texture just didnt sit well on my pallet; However, the starter chips and salsa was pretty good.
My server was Kathleen who was very friendly and efficient, with a nice smile and gave good eye contact. Would possibly bring family/friends here another time - Thanks for a nice late lunch

This is our traditional lunch stop when we drive through St.Louis. The service is always spot on (we don't have to wait long to get back on our road trips). The food comes out hot, fresh, and delicious! We really like the chips also (they're constantly bringing them fresh to you along with new salsa). Definitely worth the stop in St. Louis!!

So I’ve been coming here since 2014 and the quality of food & good service never disappoints me. Today, January 3, 2022 After work I needed good fiord and great service & I got it. The best I’ve ever had and you know I eat at plenty of quality restaurants. Hats off to the owner & chef for consistency of food & service during this pandemic. Kathleen was my server tonight and she made great recommendations for their new menu. I love it.
The best tamales I have ever had at a restaurant. 😋 The salsa is amazing and chunky. The service was also great!
I frequent this location and they never disappoint with the food or drinks. Their house salsa is top tier and the chips are always fresh, thin and crispy. I really enjoy their steak and chicken tacos, the meat is so flavorful and has a smoky grilled flavor with a slight char, so good! The only issue that occurred happened because my friend didn't read that the Chimichanga doesn't come with queso cheese on top, but she still enjoyed her dish.
