I don’t know about you, but when I think about golf courses I think about lots and lots of bright green grass and men wearing funny golfer pants. I don’t ever think, “I bet they have some good food there!” but after a recent visit to Tobey’s 19th Hole on the Balboa Park Golf Course, I may need to change my line of thinking. Tobey’s 19th Hole is a little hole-in-the-wall restaurant that’s easy to overlook. It doesn’t seem like much once you walk in, but the excellent food and breathtaking view is enough to settle and keep you in. Once you look over their simple menu and try some of their homestyle eats, you’ll be hooked and want to became a regular here, too...
I love it here! I come all of the time with my uncles when they are in town.
Christina (I think that was her name) was the best! Super sweet girl, and she did very well with my uncles' eclectic personalities ♥️

Friendly service and good breakfast/brunch options. The chicken fried steak was delicious along with the gravy. Not salty, just perfect.
There is plenty indoor & outdoor seating available. Menu is a little limited on other items, but great selection for breakfast. The building is also a bit dated, but clean overall.
Toby's 19th deserves 5 stars for a few reasons. First, although they are a diner, they do diner food really, really well. Everything was cooked just perfectly, from the eggs to the sausage to the pancakes. Their homemade salsa is also delicious. Secondly, they have great service. I think my coffee was refilled at least 6 times. Lastly, they have an amazing view of the Balboa Park Golf Course. It's one of the better old school diners in San Diego. Pictured are the pork chop special with O'Briens potatoes and toast and the one pancake, one egg, and two sausages breakfast dishes.
Tucked away in the corner of Balboa Park overlooking Florida canyon, Balboa Hospital and the downtown skyline, Tobey's offers real, wonderful, food. There is a large parking lot for the golf course which is nearly empty on weekday mornings. Tobey's has been here for nearly 100 years. I'm always amazed that it is not busy. Bring your out-of-town friends to see a calm, beautiful, peaceful, side of San Diego that few will ever see.
Great little restaurant with incredible views of the city and golf course. Large portions, good food, reasonable prices, nothing fancy, but lots of quality. Friendly, professional, service. A hidden gem for breakfast or lunch
The best corned beef hash I've ever had, excellent service from Sara and a wonderful view of the Balboa golf course and downtown San Diego skyline.
Updated review, May 2022
A garden salad with grilled chicken was $12.75. It was a side salad consisting of lettuce, three small and thinly sliced tomatoes, and perhaps 3 ounces of grilled chicken breast. No onion, no croutons, no peppers, no anything else. Enjoyed it, and brought it to their attention, and the response was shoulder shrug… We don’t make the prices. Come on. Can’t you care a little bit?
Original review :Very modest but very delicious omelette first time there. Didn't want hash browns so they kindly gave me tomatoes ... nice! Also good customer service. And cold beer ... and they pour a nice glass.
This is my Go-To breakfast /lunch venue. Walking distance from home and unbeatable food, atmosphere and prices.
Service is excellent.
Good American food, great service & drink prices. Plus a lovely view. We will definitely be back.
Your standard diner / greasy spoon fare with a beautiful view of the city skyline over the golf course
-the homemade hot sauce is delicious
Nice ambiance, great view, and great food! It has that homy feeling yet you feel fancy because of the view😀
This place is absolutely amazing! The view is gorgeous. I love this place so much been coming here since I was a kid. I come here for breakfast and I’m never disappointed. The food is always fresh and the hot sauce is DELICIOUS. Do not come here if you’re looking for over the top presentation or an aesthetic. This place is literally history in SD and I hope it never changes!
Very nice breakfast place.
This place is very unassuming. In fact my adult niece and I questioned whether to eat breakfast there because it was a little runned down. However we sat outside and had a beautiful view of the public golf course and downtown San Diego as the backdrop. We ordered our breakfast and it was delicious (breakfast burrito and Tobeys omelet with their special home fries). The prices was great too. Our waitress, Melissa, was pleasant and fantastic. Overall really nice experience.
Calamari sandwiches on the potato bread and crisp French fries above the downtown vista is sublime.
Food is great, view is amazing! Best homemade corned beef hash in town. I love this place!
Great food a beautiful scenery overlooking the Balboa golf course.
Hidden spot for breakfast at the Balboa Park Golf Course. Classic old-school diner with breakfast counter and dining room with amazing panoramic view of San Diego Skyline, Harbor and Point Loma. Reasonably priced menu with friendly staff.
