My recent visit to a left me thoroughly impressed, I ordered their Rice Plate “The Works” with some shrimp spring rolls, and their fried chicken.
It was nothing short of spectacular. The thick sliced BBQ beef, BBQ pork, Shrimp was tender and packed with flavor, a testament to the kitchen's skill in marinating and grilling. Each bite was an excellent balance of savory and slightly sweet — a complimenting blend of flavors.
The Shrimp Spring Rolls were excellent as well.
Accompanying the plate were aromatic jasmine rice and a salad. The rice was fluffy and served as the ideal canvas to soak up the delicious beef juices and sauces. The vegetables provided a refreshing contrast, enhancing the overall balance of the dish.
What truly stood out was the attention to detail in the presentation. The plate was garnished with vibrant herbs, adding a touch of freshness and color that not only pleased the palate but also the eyes.
Excellent place for Vietnamese cuisine. This.place.slaps. We tried this place as part of our annual trek out to San Diego Comic-Con. So many items to try whether you want your typical phở (of which theirs is not and is levels above what you'll find at your average phở place). We mostly got what was currently listed under their limited availability specials and they were prepared to perfection. I had the beef carpaccio which was mind blowing while having all the expected Vietnamese flavors. You'll want to come back and try other things off the menu. The place is nice with an open air feel given they can open the garage-style doors to expand their eating area. The staff are polite and professional. They are following current Covid guidelines. Recommended.
We had a choice of four places to meet our friend and this is what he chose because it was different from his norm. It was a great choice. The service was friendly from the first hello until we finally headed out. The menu is mouth watering just reading it. Our server had good suggestions and everyone was more than satisfied with what they chose. I had the Shank rice plate (filet mignon) and I'm still drooling thinking about it. He went for The Works rice plate which was also amazing . My friend went for the Bun bowl and had a good amount leftover for tomorrow. After chatting a while longer we decided on dessert and tried the Chinese donuts and the Affogato. Those donuts were perfection and the Affogato was so good. Definitely add this place to your list, and you'll for sure want to come back
This is a great spot to get consistently very tasty pho in a cool/conveniently-located space with great service. Definitely pricey, but at least the food is actually good, which seems to be more and more rare these days.
It's hard not to go with the signature pho every time, but all kinds I've tried have been great, the beef stew included. Drinks are very good. Apps/sides are worth exploring.
Had a friend try the vegan pho -- I'm told it was tasty but the noodle-to-broth ratio was off, too many noodles. Still, having the option is appreciated!
Everything was delicious. We had the spring rolls and chicken wings for apps. We had a variety of Pho that was so delicious. Broth was excellent!
My TOP #10 Vietnamese Cuisine in San Diego!
Locate in North Park so you will have to find street parking, but there is a Public Parking right across the street and its cheap ($1/hr)
Flavorful Pho, sweetness mostly from beef bone, you can easily tell most of the food here are perfect combination between traditional Vietnamese style and modern American style.
Price per meal is slightly higher than other Pho places, if you go there during their Happy Hour between: (3pm-6pm Mon. thru Fri) all tap beers $5, $10 Shank and Bone Bowl (picture).
Overall this place is worth to try out if you ever go to San Diego!
Such an amazing Vietnamese restaurant in SD! We were blown away by the quality and freshness of the food :) we order the Pho special and Cá Kho rice dish. Tastes like home.
This place is awesome! Wish we lived in SD. It would be our go-to. We started with bone marrow for appetizers, amazing!
We had the Filet Mignon Pho, Sugar stick shrimp, and the crepes. We finished up with the donut! Everything was amazing.
A buddy invited me there, I wasn't hungry, but why turn down a free meal? 😋
Had a Japanese style lager (bomb!)
The Pho with the bone marrow and shank has to be the best I've had in town, the broth made it great. I wasn't hungry yet managed to finish everything on the bowl. I will definitely take my wife there and enjoy a great meal. BTW parking sucks..
I absolutely love this restaurant and highly recommend. The brisket Banh mi, available on Thursdays, is outstanding. All of the appetizers are amazing. I keep coming back! Always a solid experience and outstanding food at a good price!
SIGNATURE PHỞ is super delicious!
That's how PHO should taste.
Second-day craving for it. I wish you have late-night delivery 😊
The signature pho has huge portions with multiple beefs. Good taste.
I finally tried Shank and Bone! I walked by a few times recently and knew it needed to be added to my must try list. Normally I'd probably order pho at a restaurant like this but decided to branch out a little and ordered one of the specials, the sugarcane shrimp. It was very tasty. We also shared an order of the Bahn xeo tacos which was a good choice as an appetizer. There are quite a few things I want to come back to try, the bone marrow crustinis sound amazing as well as the scallops on the half shell.
This is your spot for modern and slightly dressed up Vietnamese food, right in the heart of North Park. Went here for a late lunch and was not too crowded, atmosphere was nice with the open garage door concept.
I recommend getting the house specials - Banh Xeo Tacos, Catfish Claypot (Ca Kho To), Sugarcane shrimp (banh hoi chao tom)
- as the other typical menu items are easy to find at other Vietnamese spots. All 3 items were amazingly dressed with all the herbs and sauces. The biggest surprise was the sweet and sour prawn soup that came with the catfish claypot, almost reminded me of a Filipino sinigang. That could’ve been a dish itself!
Careful though, I think many of these items are limited availability, so not sure if only available weekends and/or can run out by dinner. Also got the dry pho which is definitely a more unique find, great stir fry-like dish that lightened up with all the herbs that were in it.
Will have to come back for the wagyu pho and bone marrow banh mi!
If you are like me, which loves meat on bones and bone marrows. You have to check Shank & Bone out. The must-have that we ordered every time is their big bones pho soup. It doesn’t come with noodles but you can order it. The taste of it is always flavorful and delicious. This time, I tried something new, the Vietnamese style tacos, they are very yummy. But I have to say they don’t taste like Mexican tacos at all, it’s more like a mini Vietnamese omelette. Anyways, the taste is great.
FOOD & DRINKS
I had the braised fish and tried several other items including their bone marrow. The taste was fresh and authentic but I think the braising juice needs to be more caramelized and a bit more heat. I understand that the food here might be catered more towards the western audience but a bit of black pepper wouldn’t hurt if you don’t want to go all out and use chilis.
SERVICE
Hospitality and service was top notch!
ATMOSPHERE
A take on modern street food style.
RATING
Authentic Vietnamese food prepared with fresh ingredients and a price tag that might be hard to swallow for some. I personally think it's fair to ask for a certain price if everything adds up but if you just want some authentic Vietnamese food there is an endless sea of Vietnamese restaurants that sell their food at an unbelievable low price.
The banh mi is very well made! Soft bread, tasty filling. One less star because service has some room for improvement, but the food is great.
