Went there based on Yelp reviews. When we arrived and found the line down the stairs, we knew we were going to be in for a treat. Unless you're a large party, you're seated with others. It's small and no nonsense, but the food is beyond what we could've expected. Highly recommended if you want a break from fake American Chinese food!!!
Honestly, the people who gave this place 1 star, said it was expensive, or tasteless are WRONG. We paid $30.25 for a soda, a beer, a wonton soup (which feeds two easy), an order of fried rice, and a clay pot. We were shocked to find how inexpensive the bill was. As for the claims it was "tasteless," the same applies. Being from NY and working in a town that is primarily Chinese, I can say the majority of Chinese food I've eaten in my life has been gross, but this was authentic and flavorful.
PS, I actually abhor Chinese food. I enjoyed my dinner here. Says something about the place.
We happened on this awesome place, menu out front looked good & the prices reasonable. Our group of 4 ordered the family style B option. It included soup & potsticker appetizers, 5 entree dishes. We liked & ate everything.
We did see a waitress have issues with people who left. The place was nearly full when we arrived & stayed that way the whole time.
Love it. My daughter & I love this place. Food is delicious. Price is reasonable. Best chinese food ever. Service is great. Highly recommend it!
Came here for CNY reunion dinner. Very impressed with the food, amazingly good! Salted fish eggplant chicken claypot was one fantastic dish you shouldn't missed. Prompt service. A 5 star restaurant.
Great tasting food at excellent prices! We had dinner at this charming place yesterday evening. A party of 3 and we left with plenty of leftovers. Aftward, we ran into a couple, right around the corner, looking for a good place to eat. We referred them right over!

Fabulous pot stickers and great service also loved the clay pot chicken.
Best Chinese food I have ever had! Flavor, portion and variety were top notch!
This our favorite place to eat when in Chinatown, super friendly and the food is amazing, we recommend to all out of town guests!
We ordered pot stickers, wontons, princess chicken, and chicken chow mein. Princess chicken was amazing like orange chicken but sweet and spicy.
The oxtail clay pot was our favorite dish though everything was excellent.

Great food, nice ladies. Very small place but very friendly..
Good food at reasonable price
It was busy at the time early evening and we found out why.The food here was excellent and all the dishes were authentic Chinese and tasty.
Great value for money. Probably one of the better clay pot restaurants I have eaten at in the United States. I ordered the Dinner combo A. Orange chicken and the sour soup are pretty good. Dimsums are decent. Not a huge fan of the veggie tenders.
We were looking for an authentic Chinatown dining experience on our trip. Two of us had Hong Kong Clay Pot on our lists and we decided to try it. Don't blink, or you'll miss the nondescript doorway with the tiny letters over it leading to the stairway up to the restaurant. If you feel like you're heading up into an attic, once you enter the dining room, there's not much to change that feeling! The dining area is small, and filled quickly after we arrived. Larger tables are arranged with a large lazy Susan in the middle to facilitate sharing. The waitress was brusque and not helpful with the menu, but we'd already figured out this restaurant is known for cooking food in a clay pot, essentially steamed, and serving it to you still in the pot with a community dish of rice. I had the seafood pot that was juicy and delicious with fish, shrimp, and bean curds in a slightly tangy sauce. Other dishes were hit or miss with the group, as tastes in our large group varied. The quail was deemed ok, as were the honey walnut prawns. Braised Tofu and Tofu Chicken were both excellent. They also offer a menu for large groups, which looked like loads of fun if you want to bring a group of 6 or more try a little bit of 5 or 6 different dishes.
Service was so-so, but the prices were very reasonable. If you go with a smaller group sit in a window and enjoy the view of Grant Avenue. If you're looking for a unique, authentic experience, add this to your short list of places to visit in Chinatown.
When you visit the San Francisco Bay Area, I highly recommend going to Hong Kong Clay Pot. This was a hidden gem of a restaurant. After a stroll in Chinatown, enter the doorway and up the stairs to excellent dinner. We were greeted by the hostess/server. She was friendly and helpful directing us to our table. Tea was served. We ordered the salt and pepper chicken wings, wonton soup and stir fried spicy green beans with chicken. Delivered to our table by the chef himself. All highly recommend. The meal was excellent. I suspect everything on the menu would be just as delicious. Another plus was that the dinner didn’t cost an arm and a leg. Also, we given a free 2024 year of the dragon calendar. Definitely a place to plan a visit.
Sizzling clay pot! Decent Hong Kong food in generous portions.
Wonton soup is gentle and tasty. It has about six pieces of wontons so it’s also perfect to share. Also comes with bok choi.
Bitter melon isn’t very common in restaurants because the vegetable is bitter. The chef handled it well.
Pot stickers are actually fried dumplings…
Food is quite oily in general but otherwise tastes good.
Service is friendly and fast. Price is good. Somehow Chinatown feels quite empty in the evening.
Best authentic Chinese restaurant in San Francisco! The owners are super nice and friendly!! Good service. Foods were delicious. Big portions. Prices are reasonable. Traditional Chinese decoration. Family business. I always like to support small business rather than going to chain or fancy restaurants.
Definitely my favorite Chinese restaurant in SF Chinatown. Highly recommend it!! Must try!
This was a very CUTE place! This little hidden gem was exactly that. The hospitality made us feel right at home. Just like if I was visiting my aunts house. ☺️ The FOOD 🤤 the food was like nothing I’ve tasted before. We were automatically served a Jasmine tea which we loved. We had hot and sour soup and egg flower soup to start and enjoyed several entrees. Don’t miss it, just look for the stairs and head right on up. They’ll be happy to see you.
Decent restaurant all around. However, I wish the servers were more helpful selecting food from the menu (it’s veryyyy overwhelming).
The service was good, slow at times, and the ambience overall was good.
Love this hidden gem. Google pointed me in the right direction. Loved the orange chicken and chicken fried rice. The walk is steep up the stairs so be careful but otherwise, I enjoyed the charm of walking up the stairs. And we sat at a window seat and loved the view down from the second floor. First time in Chinatown so it was a great stop along the way.
Food is great. Giving it 4 star for the authentic Chinese experience. Interior is a bit old and dusty. Other than that really enjoyed the two visits here.
Cool, kind of quirky looking interior. I appreciated the traditional green tea at all the tables. The food is served family style and is DELICIOUS. The customer service was good although a bit difficult getting the waitress attention on a busy evening as it was when I went. I really enjoyed this place and would recommend to others.
Decent food but it also depends what you order. Orange chicken and fried rice was very plain and bland. The tofu claypot and spring rolls were absolutely amazing. The stairs to the restaurant pose a big challenge if you have any sort of mobility issues- bad knees etc.
Visiting SF for the first time and happened upon this place while trying to choose a Chinatown lunch spot. Immediately got seated as a solo diner at the window. Waitress was super on top of things. I chose the spring rolls (crunchy outside and almost creamy inside, would get again) and the spareribs and pumpkin (with thick white onions and beans) clay pot. It came out quick. I didn't realize the spareribs would have random bones and wasn't sure how best to eat it, but overall was fine. Slightly sweet with starchy pumpkin (also lightly sweet) to balance the savory broth. I'd get this again except maybe without meat, but it probably won't be my favorite entree on this trip. Rose tea that was free was great. I did walk past the entrance like three times... really have to see it from across the street first to not miss the signage.
Simple and correct Chinese dining. This is the place if you want good food and great atmosphere. Like dining in Hong Kong!
First time in this local. Variety of tasty dishes, fast service and fair prices. Recommend!
Nice little joint with good and reasonably priced food. The portions were also pretty decent. The place is a little small and packed and you will have to go upstairs to the restaurant.
We ordered the seafood claypot, which was really good and the curry chicken claypot which my son loved.
Tastes like good, honest cooking with fresh ingredients being the main emphasis. Pricing is reasonable and affordable considering the portions & quality!
Fantastic food! Clay pot clam and pumpkin was amazing as was curry chicken, bitter melon and kung pao prawn. What’s not to love?! The staff was very friendly too. It’s up stairs above the tourist shops. It feels really local, like a great find.
Really good food. We liked everything we ordered and we will be back when we're in San francisco again!! The service was extremely quick
I has been living in United State for almost 5 years and I visited many cities. My husband and I really love the Cantonese food and I need to say that this is best food that I eat here en all United States!
It’s so yummy, full taste and delicious!
If you come to
San Francisco you need to come to this restaurant!
The best of the best Chinese food ever!
Maybe it looks very simple, but it’s full taste!
THE BEST CHINESE FOOD!!!
I don’t think I can say enough for Hong Kong Clay Pot! The wait is absolutely worth it! We went for dinner and waited on the steep stairs. If you have a hard time with stairs, this may be a place to have someone pick up and bring to you!
It’s such a ‘whole in the wall” in the midst of China Town. As you go up the stairs you wait for someone to seat you. There are big round table and many little 4tops. We were sat on one side of a big round table with another family on the other side.
We ordered spring rolls and potstickers for appetizers. We had sweet and sour chicken, sesame chicken, and a curry dish. These were spectacular!
We ordered a Beef Noodle dish from seeing it on the wall and when it arrived it was NOT what was expected. So passed on eating it and ordered Chicken Fried rice. It came out quickly and was amazing! (Most of their chicken is all white meat!)
They do not split bills, so if you are coming with a big group, bring cash or be ready to Venmo the paying friend.
I have saved this place on my Google map and CAN’T wait to go back!
