This is a great spot, really delicious food, very good prices, very kind people working. I also appreciate that they make things thai spicy (not white people spicy) that can be hard to find
If you come for lunch the portions are on the smaller size. The dinner portions are fairly big and you can almost share with someone. But everything on the menu is absolutely delicious!!! My husband and I have loved everything they have to offer! And the staff is always so friendly and welcoming! This is a true gem in SLO. Keep in mind they are not open for lunch on the weekends.
I have been eating at the royal thai for over 20 years. I have introduced many family and friends to the restaurant. I adore the owners and that it truly is a family business. I even love their second location Thai Kitchen in the Village of Arroyo Grande. You can't beat their lunch special, meal with soup for 7.00, add a soda and tip, I am out the door for 12.00 and completely full. I love their garlic pepper beef, panang curry, cashew nut chicken, and tom gai (coconut soup). The owners go every week to the farmers market for their veggies. The newly remodeled building looks good, there is plenty of parking, and I can't wait for the patio to be open this summer.
UPDATE: changed to 5 stars. Their heat works on a star rating here. The menu implies "hot" is is hot as it goes. When you order your food hot, they mark 3 stars on the order slip. If you explicitly ask for more than three stars you can get some real heat!
The food here is delicious, the staff is friendly, the service is pretty quick, and the price is fair. I go pretty regularly. The pad see ew, pad Thai, red curry, yellow curry, and mussaman curry are all very good. My favorite is the mussaman curry.
My only complaint is the heat. Now I'm not sure if the heat here has been white washed due to being in SLO, or if I'm being profiled as a white boy who can't handle real heat. But when I order a curry "double hot, hotter than you normally make it when people want it hot" at a Thai food restaurant, I want the food to be genuinely spicy. But it's just not, and it never has been.
The staff is so friendly, and the food is delicious! I ordered Pad kee mao, Massaman curry, and spring rolls. I love the fresh vegetables and perfect spice level. I will be back soon!
We LOVE Royal Thai! We always go when we are in SLO, Sam and his family always make us feel welcome and the food is delicious! Hands down our favorite Thai Restaurant in SLO! Pad Ka Praw yummmmmmmy!!!!! Go for the Lunch special! Very affordable, we never leave hungry.
The best Thai food we've tasted by far! Fresh and delicious and a great selection for vegetarians and vegans. Warm and friendly staff.
First time having Thai food and I loved it - had the cashew nut with chicken and the pineapple rice. The owner was very kind and a great conversation.
We LOVE Royal Thai. Sam and his wife are so nice and kind. We seriously won't eat at another Thai restaurant. Royal Thai is the BEST..
I know this place doesn't look all that great from the outside... But I really love it!!! If you like Thai and want really reasonable prices- go and keep going! I've been there more times than I can count!
Best family run Thai. Sweet staff. Tasty food...we don't eat Chinese anymore.... We go here.
Sam and his family are the nicest people and the food is always great. Too bad the construction is taking so long and hurting the business a little bit.
Solid family run food pre-renovation. I wish them luck. We love the Pumpkin Curry!
Good service - the soup was great as was the meal - there was enough for me to take home another serving.
Good food and great service, family run. Singha 12oz beer is $6.
