Happy Food/ Casual Dining. GENEROUS portions with nice seasonings, done in traditional Portuguese/Brazilian style...AND that you do not have to drive to Newark or Elizabeth for! Our group had the Black Beans with Pork, Brazilian Style(served with rice and collards) and the Chicken and Pork Barbeque, Portuguese Style...we all have enough leftovers for several meals!! GREAT value! The red Sangria was tasty and refreshing (TWO pitchers worth!) and the homemade Serradura dessert a worthy new experience!

Good sangria, hot bread, skirt steak with generous sides enjoyed on the outdoor patio. I have to agree that the food was better before they expanded.

Welcoming. I am now a regular - they know us when we come in, they know we want sangria (homemade) right away. The food comes in VERY generous portions for a small amount of money that will last you days for left overs. I have never had a bad experience and I don't think I will. All you naysayers get off your high horse and calm down - this isn't a 5 star restaurant in NYC - it's South Plainfield, NJ. Relax and have some sangria.

WOW. How many times have I driven past this place?
Not anymore - now I go in.

Excellent food - friendly family owners. Dinners big enough to have lunch to take home.

Ironbound In South Plainfield. I'd bet if you surveyed 100 people: Where's the best Portuguese Food in NJ? South Plainfiled isn't the first answer that comes to mind.

But I would seriously urge anyone reading this to change their thinking.

Recently rennovated, Paulo's features a warm mediterranean ambience. A dining area that can accomodate a romantic dinner for two as easily as a party of 20 or more without a hitch. A beautiful stone patio for dining Al-Fresco in the warmer months, and a nice bar area for a pre-dinner cocktail, and a must stop spot for an after dinner drink.

The menu at Paulo's has all the best Portugouse fair. From wood fired Churasquieria style Chicken, Ribs and Steaks to Urban fav's like Paella, Garlic Shrimp and Tasty Chorizo.
Whatever your choice, the Overly-Generous portions will satisfy even the heartiest eaters.

Family run, the Owner Paulo greets you with a charming smile. He is a good hearted soul, who always makes you feel like part of his family. Beware gents, on nights with live music he may get your lovely bride up to dance.

Personal Fav's are the Pork and Clams Alentejana, Beef Ribs, Shrimp and Chorizo in Garlic Sauce. And their Rice... well, my wife has made me drive in many a snowstorm to get take out from Paulo's just because she had a craving for their rice.

As someone who knows their way around the backstreets of the Iornbound (not just Ferry Street) I can honestly say that Paulo's is a foodie's paradise.

Get Here, Get Fed, and Be Happy.

This was a first time take-out order at this restaurant that I've past on many occasions but never thought about patronizing ( for no particular reason). Upon my arrival the parking lot was packed; a packed lot is usually a good sign that the food is pretty good; and that theory proved to be accurate. I ordered my food and took a seat on the bench. The dining area was pretty full, the service was fast and friendly as customer s came in & out to pick up their orders. I couldn't wait to get home to try the food from my newly found Portuguese Churrascaria. Once home I had to take a taste before even getting a plate. The rice was so fresh & the chicken and black beans were both tasty and well seasoned. The amount of food was plentiful, it was more than this individual could handle at a single sitting, but that's cool, it just means more for tomorrow. I will definitely go back with hopes of trying something else from their menu and dining in.

My bf likes the new management and menu more now. But I remember liking the paella from before, which seemed to be double in portion in comparison to their new way of serving it (my boyfriend joked that he, “does not expect that they serve that amount in this economy.”) Still, everything was delish. We agreed that their yuca fries were excellent. Perfectly textured, crispy outside, soft potato-y inside, and super hot. The chicken wing app was very yummy but so small. There were some tiny bone fragments around the meat, but the texture of the fried chicken was really good if you ate carefully. We really liked the peach sangria. The mango sangria was too sweet for me, but my bf enjoyed it. The new management seems very eager to help and sounds passionate about his work.

Great food and great sangria! The bar tenders are friendly and make excellent drinks. I love the garlic chicken and portions are enough to take home for the next day. The shrimp with sausage was one of the best appetizers. We also had calamari. Dessert was yummy and our server came around with a tray to show us each item. Definitely recommend the flan! Food came out quickly once ordered. Their takeout is probably the best value as it is huge and easily enough to split between two people. It’s family friendly and casual. Can’t wait to return!

My experience didn’t get off to a great start. There was a miscommunication with my reservation however, the main waitress was very apologetic and made sure to make u feel welcome. We were sat in front of a large party and they were screaming loudly and drinking, so I assuming a celebration. Their children were running around the table and also communicating loudly. My family and just wanted a nice relaxing Sunday dinner. Especially because it was such a busy weekend - we were told that this was a nice FAMILY restaurant. The other party was so loud, I couldn’t even think and I am not being dramatic. When the waitress tries taking my order, she has to come around and try to hear anything I was saying. When I tried to get up to use the restroom, I almost hit one of their running children with my chair! The waitress offered to move us to a better place. Unfortunately, things didn’t get better from there. But I was able to get my food packed and have a better time at home. The owner and waitress were amazingly accommodating! The food was so great Too! I can’t wait to go back and try other things :)

If you're looking for great food at a great price with a friendly atmosphere with parking, check out Paulo's BBQ Bar & Restaurant. It's under new management, staff is great, prices are awesome and food and dessert are delicious. Great atmosphere for family, friends, and couples. If you go, you won't be disappointed, it does get very busy recommending to go a bit early.
