Stopped by today to try the pizza. The older guy there was super nice. He let me try a slice on the house. It was great so I ordered a small which has 6 slices. He made me a fresh pizza and I waited 10 mins. The pizza is worth the money; crispy and tasty. Please try...π
Stay with the deep dish. Their hand tossed was comparable to Hungry Howie's. But then again there is a reason they are known for their Detroit style pizza. Go for their "corners" pizza with the great crust.
Five-stars in class (Detroit-Style, Take-out/Delivery only, Focused on bringing the customer back, intent on creating addicts, etc...).
If you were intent on picking up pizza, or having it delivered tonight - go with Jet's Pizza.
I was at the Post Office today and on my way in I noticed a "Jet's Pizza" car top sign affixed to one of the cars in the parking lot, and a guy walking towards it with a "Jet's Pizza" shirt on. I asked him if they were open yet (I live near it, but I've not paid attention lately) and he said yes - so that was clearly invitation #1 to go check it out. Subsequently, I learned that he was none other than the owner/operator himself (Rob Coon) so I was doubly intent on checking out what he was clearly proud to be offering.
As is my habit when dipping my toes in new pizza waters, I ordered up the signature pie with the sparsest of toppings (normally I stick with a "just-cheese" but today I uncharacteristically ordered a pep'. Additionally, I opted in for the Jet'z Triple Cheese Turbo Stix.
This is a pizza with character - and furthermore, it is one that represents its origins fully. This is Detroit-Style (some call it Michigan-Style) pizza, which is to say that it is square (baked in an industrial tool-parts pan) with a crispy/crunchy crust and cheesy corners. Order the "four corners" pizza, or the trademarked "eight-corners pizza" and your eyes will roll back with each bite of the corners.
It IS NOT health food by any means - but yikes-a-mighty, this is good pizza. Take the full-plunge and go ahead and order it "Turbo'd". Just do it. trust me. (it's remarkable how slathering your pie with butter, romano and garlic turns it up to #11.)
At the store, I met Rob again, and I assume Mrs. Coon (Marcie) who I learned were Michigan transplants themselves. They moved from Michigan to Tallahassee in order to bring Michigan/Detroit-style pizza to Tallahassee. Think of them as midwestern pizza missionaries.
I haven't given 5-stars to any other chain pizzerias in TLH - generally (and snobbishly) reserving the 5-star status for those local outlets that I view as more artistes and less assembly-line workers. That Jet's Pizza hails from the historical epicenter of American assembly-line labor underscores that this is no delicate artisanal pie, but rather a well-oiled and robust vehicle that delivers no-nonsense toppings straight to your pie-hole.
Finally a jets in Tallahassee! Don't bother with their round - go right to the square. This is the first actual Detroit style pizza I've seen in this town. What a relief!
I got a free sample, it was ok. I like NY style, this isn't. The guy told me it's Detroit style which I'm not familiar with. Not my kinda pizza.
