The first time there, will be back for more.
Good food, excellent service!! Very clean place. I really like that they have salsa bar, awesome flavors by the way.
Calaveras is my absolute favorite Mexican place thus far. There's some serious competition, especially Real Taco in Bixby, but overall, Calaveras is GOAT. Their sauces are so flavorful, each meat has a totally unique taste and texture, and can we even talk about the pineapple habanero salsa!??!?! Good Lord! But honestly Calaveras, I hope you are okay. Sometimes they seem a bit down, and I really want them to succeed. So go eat some delicious tacos for me, Tulsa, okay??? I can only consume so many.
If you’re in the Kendall-Whittier Arts District, or need an excuse to visit, don’t miss out on the food, and atmosphere of Calavera’s. Excellent salsa bar, friendly staff, and an amazing LA Burrito
The Birra tacos are amazing! They make avocado ones for me! The salsa bar is legit awesome.
My first time back since they reopened did NOT disappoint! Same great food but with more menu options. The birria tacos were incredible! Great rotating food specials, drinks, desserts, and of course the salsa bar. Fun festive decor with a new big back room for additional seating. There is a patio too. Friendly, efficient service. I will definitely be back!
GO HERE. NOW. This place is awesome. I would go back to Tulsa just to go here. The tacos were pretty good, but the guacamole was some of the best I’ve ever had. Lots good drink options too, good light, and wonderful vibes.
I really love this place, it’s my new fav spot. Service was great, staff was friendly. Here’s what we ordered:
-CON QUESO 12/10 YUMMIEST Queso ever.
-LA STYLE BURRITO 20/10 SO GOOD STAR OF THE SHOW. It’s stuffed with all the right things, potato wedges, guac, steak, pico, ughhhh to die for. Every bite was full and flavorful.
-BIRRIA TACOS 10/10 BEST IVE HAD SINCE LIVING HERE. Tacos were extra crispy, the consume was *chefs kiss.
-WET ASADA TORTA 8/10 My sister got this, she’s a huge fan of tortas and said the torta was really good, it’s only getting an 8/10 cause she didn’t really enjoy it being wet. She’d likely order again but just the normal torta vs the wet, nevertheless, still delicious.
Can’t wait to visit again, they also have pozole verde, which I was surprised! Usually I can only find pozole rojo & am always wanting the verde version. Will be ordering that next time!
Everything was fresh and delicious here. The birria was outstanding. I had the chimi, but was jealous of my friend's Vampira tacos! Next time,
First time eating here. Great food, great atmosphere. The fish tacos were excellent! Definitely will be going back.
I walked in at 8:30 am... it smelled like a high class steak house inside... I ordered verde chiliquilles and it was the best Mexican breakfast I have found in tulsa.. the fresh salsa bar was amazing and the service was impeccable....
Started my Saturday with a walk to Calaveras for breakfast. I was greated warmly at the counter and ordered coffee and juevos rancheros. I hit the salsa bar and kept it simple with some creamy green. It's tangy bite so good with the warm fresh chips provided with my drink. The food arrived quickly and was feast for the senses even before taking a bite. The potatoes had crispy edges and tender insides, so much better than the obviously frozen "home fries" many breakfast places serve. Everything on the plate enhanced the other things on the plate. This isn't my first meal at Calaveras and hopefully not my last.
Did the Red Birria Tacos. Very good, but even with Taco Tuesday 15% discount, this is not a single $ priced place. Google needs to put $$ at the least.
The service and ladies here are great, salsa bar is very nice with a very interesting salsa for the chips. Meal was spot on with great shredded beef flavored wonderfully.
Only this wrong is Google's fault as for work lunch this is a bit high in cost. Put on 2 $$ and it was great.
Very good! First time I have dined there and I really enjoyed it. Nice and quiet and easy to have a conversation. Staff was very polite.
2017 was the last time I dined at Calaveras Mexican Grill. (Review posted on Yelp by Spike S.) During the peak of the pandemic, Calaveras closed.
Today, I found the restaurant was operating as I remembered. Calaveras is a great, clean, comfortable restaurant. Paintings of brightly decorated skulls from the centuries old, Mexican tradition, brighten the interior.
Minimal service. Order at the counter, food delivered to your table. Chips a little stale, because they don’t keep them heated. The serve yourself salsa/condiment bar, still located along the west wall of the restaurant. It is a satisfying assortment of capsaicin levels salsa blends, colors and flavors. Essential sliced peppers, radishes and limes are provided to satisfy to most anyone’s Mexican food condiment desires. It required several trips, but I tried them all.
I had an excellent meal. My choice was the Vampiro Tacos. I do recommend these. Check the menu for an inventory of the components and the meat options available. I had carnitas on mine. Perfectly cooked shredded seasoned pork. Moist, tender, pork with satisfying crispy strands on the outside from being fried. The corn tortillas had blackened charred patches of aroma, that blended perfectly with the pork, fresh pico de gallo and guacamole! They exceeded my expectations! Welcome Back Calaveras!
Spike's Nonessential information……. For years I have been wandering around Eastern Oklahoma trying every new, and established hole in the wall Mexican restaurant I could ferret out. I have experienced the full spectrum of the cuisine that falls within the broad definition Mexican food. Some unpalatable, some delectable and some as mediocre as a frozen Swanson’s Enchilada dinner. I have read the testimonial analyses in hundreds of reviews that declaim a restaurant to be “authentic” Mexican, Tex-Mex or the despicable Cali-Mex. Many of the weak assessments based solely on the color of the cheese used. Something I have learned in meeting and talking with the proprietors of the small mom and pop restaurants, is that “authentic” Mexican food is very diverse. The variations can be representative of the many regions of Mexico and heavily influenced by family recipes passed down through the generations. I have been in restaurants that are so filthy stray cats refuse to eat the scraps tossed out the back door by the kitchen staff. I am certain that staying current on my hepatitis vaccinations has prevented lengthy hospital stays. I have found very few restaurants to be pristine. The exceptions exist. Those that are, make my favorite lists and get appropriate accolades. In my opinion, street tacos are the baloney sandwiches of Mexican food. Very little culinary skills are required to prepare and assemble, using two or three simple ingredients that anyone can duplicate. But it is a current fad. And, never eat anything from a food truck. The health department probably doesn’t know it exists and likely has never visited.
