Simply the best in town. Great small staff, wonderful food, that's flawlessly executed very laid back atmosphere. I've never had a bad meal in all my years that we've eaten here. Kanpai!
Bruce and Adam whip up amazing sashimi sushi treats. The hospitality of Susan, Mayumi and Olga is second to none. Kanpai is a fun place to be!!
Delicious. Food is top quality and service is always just as good. My husband and I have been here several times and aren't ever disappointed. Very creative chefs, nice selection, decent pricing, beautiful presentation, and most importantly the food is fresh with great flavor.
Very friendly service (even though we came in to eat very close to closing time!) The sushi was expertly made, and delivered quickly. I will definitely be going back.
Best in Virginia Beach?. Although I actually prefer Sapporo East, Kanpai is arguably the best sushi restaurant in Virginia Beach. The fish is fresh, the rice is perfect and the preparations are precise. I'm not a fan of the service or the ambiance, but the food is good enough to almost entirely eclipse those shortcomings.

Fabulous!. Been to Kanpai a few times now. Have been more impressed with each visit, especially that incredible meal for two deal. Love the sushi - lots of options and always fresh. The gyoza and beef wrapped asparagus are terrific apps. LOVE, LOVE, LOVE their yakisoba! I haven't had soba that good since I actually lived in Japan! There are a lot of non-sushi options if sushi's not your thing. So there's no reason not to visit! The staff is always friendly and attentive. Looking forward to many more visits!
Great Sushi place. Tried the Lunch special, awesom deal. If you do like Mango, try the Crazy Monkey Rolls. Yummmmmi!
This is hands down the best sushi in the area. Everything is very fresh and prepared nicely. Prices are very reasonable. Service can be a little slow but if you just relax and enjoy the experience everything will be enjoyable.
Fresh Sushi. You know when its a good Sushi place when you got asians all up in there. Pretty fresh sushi which of course is key. Wait service was excellent. The Sushi Chef, which we believe he was the owner, was a great guy. Very friendly and accomodating. Loves taking Sakai shots if you take it with him. You won't be dissappointed.
I've been all over the world and have been to sushi restrauants in each place from Australia to Bali indonesia to Panama & Peru but have never has sushi as good as at Kanpai!! The sushi quality, expert preperation and great wait staff make Kanpai my # 1 favorite!

The Best of the Best Sushi!. This place is to die for. It's the best sushi I've tasted in a long time. The service is always great and the staff always treats you so well. The owner is a big fisherman and he actually hand rolls the sushi himself behind the bar. Whatever you order the food is always artistically presented to you. I have to say their "Clear Soup" is extremely tasty. It's a very trendy atmosphere, and the prices are reasonable especially for the great quality of sushi you're getting.
Theirs live music their a lot (Jazz style). Their bar is fully stocked with beer, wine, different kinds of sake, and they have a wide selection of cocktails to choose from.
No matter if they are super busy or slow, I always get seated right away and the food always comes out super fast.
Their 2 for menu is def. a home run! You get 2 apps, and you get to choose 2 specialty rolls a long with 2 other rolls and a dessert (Their Crème brûlée is by far amazing) for only 39.00. My boyfriend and I are big sushi fans and we go their all the time, sometimes even twice a week.

Best Sushi in VB. There are actually several pretty good sushi restaurants in Virginia Beach (surprise!), but I think Kanpai is probably the best.
My wife and I have ordered there at least a dozen times and only once did I have a "meh" experience -- not because their preparation was bad, but more because I chose a roll that was a little outside of what I normally like.
The atmosphere is nice inside. The wait staff have always been pleasant. When they've been very busy, it can get a little slow, but the food is always worth it.
It is definitely worth it if you are a sushi fan. They actually have a number non-sushi menu items, but I can honestly say of those I've only had the asparamaki and edamame (both very good as well).

3/5 Star - Trendy Sushi Joint. Pros: Nice and Trendy on the inside, Some selections are pretty fresh

At first glance: It has a small and boring storefront, but once you go inside, you'll be a little surprised at the decor.
My thoughts: I've been in this complex for the Chinese food at Jade Villa and always have seen this here but never went inside because I judged it by it's cover. I was pleasantly surprised that it has a very refreshing atmosphere completely different from the outside. Their specials accommodated for the higher priced items. I opted for their raw oysters Japanese style - very similar to Morimoto but better. I compared it to Morimoto only because it's the only other place I've had it that way, but it's not to say that Morimoto did it good to begin with. Kanpai did it good and was content with the half dozen I ordered. I have to admit, we ate at Jade Villa prior to coming in here, so we didn't go ahead and order a full dinner. The pieces that we ordered was decently sized, but like I said, it was a bit on the expensive side. The fish selection was good and fresh, but my complaint goes to the sushi rice. It was a bit on the hard side and found myself wanting to sin and only eat the fish portion of it. Their egg omlette sushi (now give me a second before you go off and ask me why we ordered that of all things...) were well, frozen and looks prepackaged. How can I tell? It's very yellow. If it was made fresh, you will see pan marks on it from when they fry it... (just like you would on a nice piece of steak or burger or even hot dog - even if it's just for looks). Don't believe me, just google it.
Alternatives: I've been a long time customer to Kyushu on Newtown Road. They are the only Japanese owned Sushi Restaurant in Virignia Beach. However, they aren't as creative as Kanpai.

Awesome Japanese restaurant. Restaurant is well-themed and has excellent staff. Plenty of seating. Parking can be limited if the parking lot is full.
Food can not be highlighted well enough. Good amount of selection and all choices seem appealing. Menu does seem quite big and I definitely think their speciality roll menu can be slimmed down. Otherwise sushi was fresh and delicious.
Service was excellent from wait staff to sushi chefs. Very friendly, especially if you sit at the bar.
Recommendations: everything was delicious.

This place is good. Very good! My dinner box came with teriyaki chicken, fried pork over white rice, spicy tuna roll, and tempora veggies. Started with fried oysters, which was good and a Tokyo tower drink. This place is worth a visit or even a spot in the rotation.
What an amazing place! When you enter, you are transported to Japan and the food is authentic, flavorful and full of Japanese quality. I lived in Japan for a few years and this place reminded me of the sushi I had there. A must try if you like authentic Japanese cuisine!

For years, many people have recommended Kanpai Sushi. I finally gave it try! I am now a fan of Kanpai Sushi. I have had my go to sushi spot for years but now I think I have another.
This place has a very homey atmosphere. It's very spacious inside with a lot of seating. The service was really good. Our waitress was very attentive.
My husband and son ordered a lot of food. First we started with the Miso soup. Next some appetizers, I don't remember the names on the menu. Then we ordered a bunch of sushi. Again I don't remember the names off the menu. The fish were all so fresh. Last, we ordered dessert, Crème Brûlée. It was very good. All the food had good portions and were all very delicious.
I think I found my second go-to sushi restaurant. I recommend just order any sushi, you can't go wrong.
All the best sushi places are unassuming holes in the wall of a shopping center, like this. Outstanding sushi, soup, and salad. Lots of original rolls with exciting new combinations, not just the usual spicy tuna and caterpillar.
