Sumo is THE BEST restaurant I've ever been to. The food is great, the cooks are great, and the location is great. I live in southern Maryland but I go down to Virginia beach for my birthday just to eat at Sumo. I love the pineapple boats they give to people for their birthday. Oh, and the people that said they were sooo disappointed with this restaurant.. You're obviously retarded. For two reasons. First reason, the decorations and the plates have nothing to do with how good this restaurant is. It's amazing food all the time. And the second reason, I'm almost 19 years old and I've been going to this restaurant for my birthday every year since I was 10. So it's been open way longer than may 2011. You need to stop. In closing, this place is freakin awesome and I will never stop going. :)

LIFELONG member. Have been going to this place since it opened. The owner Sumo - used to be at Shogun at Hilltop as a chef and opened this place with his brother. Love the entire place and when I am not in the mood for sushi only I come here. The filet and shrimp with fried rice is the only thing I get. Perfect each time. The dipping sauces, the soup, and the salad dressing do not compare to any Japanese steakhouse hibachi style that I have ever been too including Benihanas in Hawaii which was double the price and half the portion and not as good in the least. Great for family get togethers or go and eat by yourself! Always someone at the grill top tables to talk to. Tuna Tataki is wonderful!!!! Great Staff as well.

Sumo has the best sushi in the area! The sushi is so fresh and the staff is so friendly! Sumo also has the most entertaining hibachi chefs!

Enough food for a Sumo Wrestler. Rule #1: Go hungry...Sumo, the owner, ensures you get plenty of food.

Rule #2: You are going to spend about 20 bones for a plate anyhow, so I'd recommend springing for either the filet mignon or scallops (or both) for an extra 5 or so.

Rule #3: Interact. Don't be afraid to encourage your chef to show you interesting things. The experience, after all, is part of what you are paying for and can be a good reason for a larger tip.

The Best Japanese Steak House. My wife and I have been eating at Sumo's since just after their opening. We have tried other places on occasion, and none of the others compare. I can honestly say I have never had a bad meal, regardless of who was cooking. Great food, great atmosphere, friendly courteous service, all at a resonable price.

We had our work Christmas party here last year but it was only about 15 people. This year we've grown tremendously to about 45 attending. Which left a bit of a daunting task to find a place not already booked or that was willing to take on that large of a reservation Decided to check with Sumo after being turned down by several other establishments. Although they seemed a little scared of that big of a group, they happily took the reservation. I too was a little nervous about how things would go but they surpassed my expectations. The staff exhibited exceptional efficiency, amiability, and a flair for entertaining, leaving us thoroughly impressed. Four tables and four cooks orchestrated the evening seamlessly, supported by very attentive staff members attending to our needs throughout the event. Of course the food was absolutely amazing. You truly outdid yourselves, contributing significantly to the resounding success of our Christmas celebration. Thank you from Underground Connections

Went for a friend's birthday party. Had a good drink which was made and served very quickly after I ordered it. The chef we had was super entertaining and kind. We had a great time and we will definitely be going back.

Haven't been here in a while but so glad I stopped in for dinner! The hibachi energy was HIGH & our Teppanyaki chef was amazing! Cooking made fun & communal!! BRING ON THE YUM YUM SAUCE!!!!!! 🥰😋

Our server, Katie, was awesome! She brought everything out in a timely manner and was very attentive and kind. Our chef was Eli and the food was fantastic, and he was great to talk to while he cooked! We’ve been here before and will definitely be back. The drinks were also delicious! 10/10!

It is one of the best Japanese steak houses. First time visiting, and I must say... "Wow!" Great menu, drinks, and so much food with a Teppanyaki meal. Large, fresh red steaks, nice size lobster tails, shrimp, and scallops! I'm sure the chicken is just as good, but I can't say since we didn't order it. Robert was our showman, who was incredible. They have a nice birthday dessert of pineapple, lei, and music. It's much better than a scope of ice cream. It's definitely one of the best we've eaten at. I'm looking forward to returning. Recommend reservations on weekends.

Amazing time! If you have the time to request a chef ask for chef Peetie. I have had great tasting hibachi and I have had great hibachi chefs. Chef Peetie brings both of them together. Hilarious from start to finish and still personable. The couple that sat with us agreed he was among the best. The fillet upgrade is always a good choice. Plus throw in delicious sushi rolls and I will be going here again soon, my whole family enjoyed it.

Excellent Japanese style hibachi. Cooked at table with flare. They allow customization for more particular eaters. I missed bean sprouts, as they do cabbage instead. I'm kind of sorry I opted out of the cabbage. Everything else was great. I encourage you to step outside the box if you had your heart set on sprouts.

Always a great time here with even better food. One of the best hibachi restaurants we've been to. Have been back numerous times, have collected all porcelain bottles, and just love coming here. Highly recommend.

If you have not eaten here you need to. The NY strip was absolutely amazing. Our hibatchi chef had a good sense of humor and the service was great. I will be back.

I have never gone here and not finished my entire plate! The food is delicious, but sometimes the service feels just a bit slow, but that may have just been the day I went. They have changed the decor a bit over the time I've been going and it definitely feels a lot more empty now, but that's also personal preference, so if we're going strictly off of food, it would be five stars.

Hibachi is so fun! Got the chicken and shrimp dinner. I haven't known anyone to finish it. Leftovers make a nice snack later.

The service was pretty good, when the waitress was around. The food is exceptional and the atmosphere is nice. I love the unlike other japanese steakhouses, the grills are in small sections, where you do not have to share your experience with other large parties if you do not care to.

We went for our daughters 30th birthday. I had no idea it would be so much fun!!! The chef was a true master of cooking and entertaining all of us!!! The food was AMAZING!!! The atmosphere is wonderful and the staff delightful!! Our family of 10 can't wait to go back!!!!

This little gem may seem to always have a bit of a wait, but once your seated and the showmanship starts you will have forgotten the stomach was just in "kill" mode! We've eaten here on several occasions throughout the years and have never been dissatisfied! If it's not family owned then they've done a very impressive job at retaining the same crew for years!!! Only 4 ⭐'s due to the renovation "still" going on, lol I think it started about 6 months after they opened lol, kidding but it has been a loooooonnng renovation!
