Beautiful restaurant space downtown!
Stopped in for a quick happy hour. Happy hour menu was decent in terms of price and offerings. Drinks were very delicious. $7-8 for a cocktail is pretty good for happy hour.
Bar service was a bit slow, but the bartenders were very nice. Ambiance adds to the experience, definitely coming back for a full happy hour and/or dinner experience soon.
We came in without a reservation during the earlier hours of the weekly happy hour. There was room at the bar, however the restaurant filled in very quick. The food is a creole style, fried / spicy options. The fried chicken and waffle was nicely done with a crunchy outside and sweet sauce. The crab cake was a good size and meaty. We didn’t enjoy the Hush Puppies - very dry and without much flavor. The $7 happy hour wine was nice as well, but the service at the bar was slower then expected. They got very very busy.
Walking in, they were pleasant. We went upstairs where you get a really nice view of the whole restuarant. The waiter that served us was extremely friendly and funny, joking with all of us and had great recommendations. We went with the "Taste the South" option where everyone at the table has to agree on those foods and decide on one side. The spiced apple cider was amazing and great to hold us over until our food arrived. The deviled eggs came first, well done but not unforgettable. The Chicken and Waffles came next, of course that was my favorite. The crispness of the skin was way above par and the moisture of the chicken was perfect to pair with the waffle. The syrup was also a great addition. The Shrimp and Grits was a bit underwhelming, especially after waiting a while, and I feel it needed salt. I will say though that the shrimps' buttery flavor really helps tie the dish together. The collared greens were a good option, just not my thing. The Pecan Sticky Buns dessert at the end was just a perfect way to end the Christmas meal. Like Cinnabon times 10. We brought a pair home. Would love to try dinner there when I get the chance, but the wallet looks a little empty for that. Overall, outstanding place and staff, just wish for the price it was a bit faster.
Succotash is great. We had 6 people and a reservation. Decided to order family style and were pleased with the large assortment of items. Everything (greens, chicken and waffles, wings, macaroni and cheese, shrimp and grits, steak, bread) was pretty good though a couple of items should have been hotter. Timing was good as well. The ambiance at the downtown location is beautiful. One downside - the deserts. The ones served with the family style are not impressive. Like an afterthought.
Stopped by for dinner before going to see a performance and had a great time! I've been to the National Harbor location and wanted to try the one in the city. Here are some of my takeaways:
Environment
It's a huge restaurant, two stories with plenty of dining space. The interior is beautiful - open floor plan with high ceilings and great architecture! Very welcoming with good energy. We went during the week so it wasn't really busy but I do suggest getting a reservation to make sure you have a place to seat.
Service
The service was great from the moment you walk in. They greet you warmly and make sure that you are served and get to your seat. They take their service serious and the servers constantly check on you through out your dining experience. Maybe a bit too much but i rather have too much then not at all which has also been my experience at other restaurants. Our served was great and attentive and made sure we had everything we needed.
Food and Drinks
We had a little bit of everything. The deviled eggs, burger and fries, chicken and waffles, mac and cheese and a desert that i can't remember (but i have pictures!). My friend enjoyed the chicken and waffles and the burger was pretty tasty. I'm a big mac and cheese fan this was pretty solid. Another stand out was the deviled eggs. Loved them. Overall the food was pretty good and I would definitely come back to try other things off the menu.
Overall
Overall had a good time at Succotash. The food was pretty good - above average I would say. A great place for a dinner date or catching up with friends. A beautiful space and great service. Definitely worth trying for yourself.
Excellent chicken and waffles with happy hour sides. The restaurant is stunning and even though we sat at the bar we really enjoyed the experience. The pickled okra that is added to the fried chicken really adds something. Great tap options and my partner had an excellent burger. Overall high recommendation.
This location is super cute! I like to bring visiting friends here because it's close to the museums and their menu seems so trendy. I've only had some of their brunch offerings but enjoy most items.
The deviled eggs are good, but the bacon jam version is better. The hush puppies are also good! I enjoy the aioli (?) they sit on and not so much the pile of pimento cheese. (Yes, I know this is a southern staple, but it's a bit much for me.)
The hangover bowl (pulled pork) and cheese burger are my favorites, but again, the burger has a pile of pimento cheese and generous spread of bacon jam, which doesn't pair the best. I also am not a fan of the gochujang ketchup. Don't get me wrong, I enjoy the spice factor it's just that there are already a lot of different flavors going on here.
On a most recent visit, we ordered the forms chicken sandwich, which was so much better than the burger. I've switched to the chicken sandwich as one of my new favorites.
I've tried a few of the brunch menu drinks, and they have all been worth it. I can only have 2 drinks before I start feeling it.
I stopped in for dinner my first night in Washington, and I must say I was extremely impressed with the gracious hospitality I received from the hostess and waitstaff. The restaurant itself has a cool vibe as well. Marco was my server, and he was friendly and very attentive. I ordered the Maryland Crab Cake, the Catch of the Day, which was Salmon, and for dessert Nana's Banana Pudding. Everything was truly fantastic. The drinks here are great as well. I ordered the Hey Peaches frozen cocktail, and it was truly delicious. The only criticism I have is that they served me both the appetizer and entree at the same time, rather than waiting between each course. Other than that, I was happy with my first time experience at this restaurant and will definitely stop in again the next time I visit the DC area.
5⭐️Brunch Experience ! The ambiance is stellar. From the moment you enter you get immediate attention. We got a good assortment of starters and cocktails. The Corn bread , Hush puppies and the amazing-warm-gooey-not to sweet sticky buns—-to die for!!!
My favorite was the steak and eggs entree. Excellent seasoning and the potatoes were delightful. Other favorites were the French Toast and the Chicken and Waffles!
Some of the fav cocktails were the Milk Punch, Whiskey Sour, and Coffee & Cigarettes. The Bellini, Margarita and Mimosas were refreshing.
Looking forward to our next visit to try the rest of of the menu ! Thank you Anthony and Nikki!!
Went here after a long day of sightseeing and it was a great meal. There are interesting drinks both with and without alcohol. The deviled egg appetizer was a hit and for dinners everyone enjoyed the meal and dessert. The fried chicken and waffles was great and the portions were large as well as shrimp and grits and the steaks. The desserts were also good we had the mint Juliep ice cream and the hummingbird cake, which was a large piece. Recommend reservations as the wait was a long time without them.
We had an amazing time! The food was delicious! Staff was extremely friendly and accommodating. Our waitress August
was knowledgeable, explaining the menu and offering suggestions. The fried oyster and tuna tartare appetizer was fresh and
flavorful 10/10. I had the shrimp and grits appetizer which was made to perfection (and I’m not fond of grits). Dessert was a platter of their mini selections. The restaurant is large but still had an intimate vibe. Loved it and will return!
For our anniversary, the two of us chose the Taste of the South. Every dish was delicious. The only negative thing I can say is that a couple of dishes (especially the wings) were cold when delivered. I suspect lots of people order the tasting, and the kitchen mass produces some of these and they sit for a while. The service was impeccable, very friendly and helpful with recommendations. I'll definitely be returning.
We were staying nearby and wanted to go out for a drink and a nosh. Succotash happy hour goes till 8, quite the bonus. Drinks were good as expected, the food was a pleasant surprise. The wings were up to my wife's Western NY standards. We look forward to another visit.
We had a 45 minute wait due to a system error, but the apology was 5 stars. We were a large party of 8.
The ambiance was great, and we were given a lot of appetizers, desserts and cocktails as an apology. The service was also great, and the food was amazing! The bread pudding, and chicken and waffles with the pickled okra were my favorites.
Jehmeel was our phenomenal bartender during my visit to Succotash at 915 F Street NW. I started off with the Belle’s Punch. The Belle’s Punch is refreshing and bubbly. You must try the Deviled Eggs. The bacon jam deviled egg is a melody of sweet, light salt and savory flavors. Go for the Smoked Chicken Wings. The wings were packed with a hint of smoke and balanced spice. Try the Chicken & Waffles for a southern twist in the district. The chicken had the right amount of crisp and crunch. The waffle was fluffy and delicious! Looking forward to returning soon.
I went to Succotash will my co workers, supervisor and CEO to celebrate Christmas party. I had the catfish sandwich which was totally tasty and delicious. Some of my co workers had the steak which was superbly done. The crab cake ordered by one co-worker was very good.. A great restaurant to eat at for lunch, dinner or breakfast.
Kudos to the chef!
Went at the recommendation of a friend for their espresso martini. We ordered the burger, wings, and hot oysters in the speak easy portion of the restaurant. Came for quick food before a Caps game and were not disappointed by food, drink nor service. Can’t wait to return. No pics of food because it was consumed so quickly.
Order the spice rub wings!!!!
