Noodles on the Boat for $12 was served, literally, in a little boat. The fresh cucumber, carrots, and noodles were crisp, crunchy and wonderful. The chicken was cooked to perfection with just a hint of spiciness. Great value, tasteful decor, good service and reasonable prices. This is definitely on the list to come back to!
Good but pricey. Spices is a local favorite of mine. There aren't many sushi options in the area (Van Ness) so Spices certainly satisfies my sushi craving whenever I need one. The quality of the food at the restaurant and for takeout is usually quite good. My only criticism would be that it tends to be a little pricey. Then again that hasn't stopped me from ordering from there yet!
Personal Favorites:
Crabmeat Wonton, Grilled Chicken Satay, Salmon Skin & Scallion
Great food at reasonable price. Really good Hot and Sour soup.
Good sushi, good service. We went for the first time for lunch on a Saturday. The service was prompt and especially considerate to my 9 year old daughter. (For example, the waitress noticed she couldn't keep a grip on their full-sized and slippery chopsticks, so brought a small pair of wooden take-out chopsticks that were easier to grip.) The sushi was fresh, generously sized, and reasonably priced. My wife's Mee Goreng was too salty, but otherwise we were very happy.
Eat In or Takeout. I've only visited the restaurant on a few occasions, & each time been impressed with both food & service. I've taken my mum there & she is not easily impressed, but Spices does the job!
If I'm in the mood for takeout, Spices is my "go to" delivery sushi. Polite phone manner, speedy delivery & good quality. The drivers are also quite pleasant too!
Great Pan-Asian Neighborhood Resto. I've been a Spices fan for some time. It's a convenient Cleveland Park neighborhood restaurant with a variety of Asian dishes. One of my favorites is a chicken dish with ginger. Most of the Thai dishes I've tried here have been good. Delivery is also fast and reliable, and the staff is friendly and helpful. My only complaint is that the portions seem to be getting smaller...
Good food and polite & friendly staff - winning combination!
Ate here Saturday night. Excellent! Seaweed salad and miso soup were great. Garlic prawns were OK.
Great service and food. The calamari and jalapeño appetizer was ok but not spectacular. It was served with some sort of citrus dipping sauce. The vegetable tempura entree and the stir fried eggplant with chicken were excellent.
We ordered half big duck, some Nigiri sushi, mango sticky rice, and aged tangerine beef peel. Overall pretty good, nigiri sushi have thick fish meat on top. But the aged tangerine peel beef is somewhat misleading. No tangerine flavour and it tastes more like an American Chinese dish-deep fried thick crusted beef with thick sauce on top. Not a fan. Duck is good. Mango not sweet but stick rice tastes good. Good location 6 mins walk from the zoo. No wait times.
Whole duck was a half. My mom and I went here this month never again. We get home and it was a small lunch instead of dinner. Never knew anybody would eat a burrito with duck and it was with cucumbers. With paid for rice they don’t give you any side we paid $17 each for rice. We got home and had all bones and leg with a slice of meat that wasn’t a whole duck.
Yes. This food is good. The sushi is very, very satisfying. I got 6 pieces of Nigiri sushi, a spicy salmon handrolled piece, and the vanilla mochi ice cream... and it was all very delicious.
The dishes had beautiful presentation, the fish had a lovely bite and texture, the rice wasn't overly dry like you might find with grocery store sushi, the handrolled piece had a lovely layering to each bite, and it was all just very good. It's a pretty plain opinion from me about this: this place has great sushi.
The mochi ice cream was also treated with respect: in terms of its presentation and my enjoyment of it.
The restaurant itself was fairly open and spacious. There were many small tables, to one of which we were seated. I didn't check the bathrooms, unfortunately, so I can't comment on cleanliness or maintenance. Overall, however, the place seemed well kept and generally well treated.
I really have no complaints, from my perspective on the sushi itself. The server was courteous and checked in from time to time. She accidentally gave us the wrong receipt at the end, but thankfully I checked it before she realized.
This is a simple review. Excellent sushi. You pay per piece, if you want Nigiri, otherwise pay by the roll or entrée. I hope my included pictures help entice you to try this restaurant. I recommend everything pictured, and hope to come back for more in the future.
5/5 stars from me.
I'm from Texas. This was one restaurant we tried that was really good. I'd definitely consider a safe go to when visiting DC. I found other places to be overly spicy and lacking flavor. That was not the case at Spices. Yum!
I ordered the kimchi dumplings, tofu fries, and maki. The tofu fries are great. Definitely will go back for them. The dumplings were tasty too. The sushi (veggie) is good but wasn't fresh. I did go right before they close, so that could have been it. Would NOT eat their sushi again but will go back for other meals.
Stop in here while on a trip to DC and it was amazing. I got the teriyaki salmon and everything (salmon, vegetables, rice) were cooked perfectly. The food was flavorful. Not to mention the lady at the bar was very friendly, and was diligent on checking with the kitchen to see the status of my takeout food.
I would certainly come here again if I am in the area.
Every item we ordered was absolutely delicious. The presentation was fantastic as well. Sashimi was great, and my udon was perfect. I'll definitely come back.
Stopped by to pickup some Sushi for lunch.
Ordered the Sushi and 2 rolls.
Sushi was sublime. Very fresh. Plenty of ginger and Wasabi. The two rolls were Tuna and California. Also excellent. Filled me up good.
Spices is a great local Asian restaurant located a half block from the Cleveland Park Metro. As a vegetarian that have great tofu options including tofu fries with delicious spices and my favorite, Bali Tofu (pictured). It is seared and has a delicious peanut based sauce. Everyone who has eaten here with me and orders anything from noodles, chicken, beef to sushi has always enjoyed the dishes. Can get them spiced to your comfort.
Great spot if you are in the area, fresh and quick turn around time.
Spices? Oh spice me up! This is the best Asian fusion restaurant in the DC metro area. When I first got the duck here, my life changed for the better. I was absolutely quacked up on the tender meat from this gourmet bird. My beautiful girlfriend got the bulgogi kimchi fried rice and I can’t say I’ve ever pleased her like that dish did. Listen, when you’re in DC, go spice up your life at Spices.
Calming atmosphere. Excellent service by Oyun. Menu variety is amazing. Highly recommend any dish with bulgogi but every dish ordered was delicious. Will definitely return on next visit. Cleveland Park rocks!!
We had a variety of dishes: Pho Bo, mei goreng, fried rice, Bulgogi Kinchi fried rice, mongolian barbecue. All were excellent.
I love the tofu fries and the laksa here. Just not a fan of plain green beans in the laksa, but the soup was delicious and very spacious compared to how it looks outside
Great food location and service. Quick walk from the zoo with a relaxed environment.
Fried tofu was super crispy.
A decent meal before heading home.
Great place. Dinner came out quick and was great quality. Server was attentive and friendly. A little pricy, but worth it.
Went in with my wife and toddler for lunch. Was promptly seated. The waiter was very knowledgeable about the menu and directed us to the vegetarian items. Ended up ordering the maki zen. The food took a bit longer then expected but when it arrived the waiter informed us that it took longer because they switched to vegetarian oil for our tempura! Appreciate the attention to detail. Also the food was delicious 😋
