One of the better sushi spots in DC near Capitol Hill. This place is tiny! I definitely don’t recommend this place if you are planning to visit this place with a big group. They have several tables and you can also sit at the bar. I ordered sushi and sashimi gold platters. The place was packed and took a while to get both orders. The quality of sashimi and sushi were pretty good. I wouldn’t say this place is better than sushi taro or nakazawa, but it is still good for the price even though their price went up dramatically since my last visit. I was frustrated that they didn’t serve the sushi right away and waited until another sashimi platter to be made. They should’ve just served it right away. Other than that I had a very pleasant experience and the staff were friendly and accommodating throughout the dinner service.
We’ve been regulars at this no frills sushi place for over a decade and continue to think it’s one of the best places for fresh fish in DC. They aren’t competing with the newer and higher end spots in DC which is part of the charm. But execution and quality of fish is top notch. Service and politeness is always spot on too. The dine-in options appears to be much more limited compared to pre-pandemic. If you’re living on or visiting the Hill, this neighborhood spot should be on your short list.

Great hidden sushi spot with chef's choice and regular offerings. Chefs' knifework is fantastic and the dishes reflect their skills fully.
Wow! Best sushi I've had in the US and at least as good as most of the places I went to when I lived in Japan. Service was great. Sushi was super fresh. All of the fish was amazing. Best uni I've had since I was last in Japan. Best anago I e ever had. I've been to all of the top sushi places in DC and this one, by far, is the top one. I highly recommend Sushi Capitol. I cannot wait to visit Sushi Capitol again!
Delicious and real sushi 🍣...some items not in menu..pls ask the server...overall is nice.
We had the pleasure of dining in for lunch over the weekend. Some of the best sushi I’ve had.
We ordered the Omakase for lunch at $50 p/person and sat at the sushi bar. I enjoyed my experience as my sushi was prepared by the chef and serve directly to me at the bar. I didn’t take any pictures of the omakase because I didn’t want to be one of those that cant put their phone down. We had over 10 slices of sushi. Our meal came with Side dishes to complement the sushi.
Friendly staff and knowledgeable sushi chef!
I order take out from here at least once a month (probably more during these quarantine times). I typically get the Sushi Gold (and a spicy yellowtail roll) and I’ve never been disappointed. The fish is always super fresh and the flavors are incredible. The staff is super kind - I love the cute messages on the take out bags!
Stiff competition with Rayburn Cafeteria sushi, but this takes the cake. Prices are commensurate with quality, so thank goodness for that MRA increase. Helps ease the pain of those long markup days when you start questioning the decisions in life that brought you to this moment.
So after years of hearing about and wanting to try this place I finally did and was happy I did. Small space, not cute or pretty or trendy just tables, chairs and some seats at the sushi bar. Because it is popular calling ahead and making a reservation is highly recommended. Going in blind my date and I ordered off the sushi menu which was a mistake since we quickly realized everyone else was doing the Chef's Tasting, which for $50 bucks you get a few courses of dishes including sushi you can't order off the menu. While everything we ordered was delicious, we missed out because the sushi going out for the tastings looked amazing. Oh well, now we know what to do the next time we go, and we will be going again!
Always great quality fish and fantastic service. We usually come here to splurge on the good stuff (omakase is the way to go), but it's also great that there are more affordable options too. We'll be back...
Best sushi I’ve had in DC. Great atmosphere, BYOB, and extremely friendly staff. This is the perfect date spot! We came here two nights in a row because we liked it so much!
Amazing experience! Great food and awesome staff. Cooks were so friendly and one even helped me learn how to use chopsticks!! The owner is a very kind man. My family had a great time. Definitely recommend:)
12/11/2018...still excellent. Also their treatment for birthdays is wonderful, highly recommend.
10/2017: The omakase is a steal its price. The space is small and intimate, perfect for dates or small groups. Wait staff and sushi bar chefs were all excited for me to try their food but were not overbearing. The chefs certainty showed pride in their work.
Well this is a little overdue. Was super thrilled to be able to get to eat here for diner on a trip. Hands down this omakase is amazing. Everything was delicious. Wish we had one in Chicago.
For those interested in the omakase it costs $50 and my experience included:
-Amusements of the day (See photo - Tempura fried shrimp head, raw oyster with shoyu, tender octopus, salmon sashimi)
-12 pieces of nigiri (served in 2 sets of 6)
-Handroll with toro
Everything was prepared and presented expertly. It was a quick in and out process as traditional sushi counters are. The fish served for the omakase was very standard. Having heard Sushi Capitol being dubbed "Best sushi in DC" I expected more extravagant offerings. Also, the manner in which the chef handled the fish was not delicate, as it usually is.
To summarize, a great omakase value but not life changing.
BYOB.
Astonishingly good fish. Some of the best imaginable. The chef opened with cuts of fatty tuna that would be the star at a different restaurant. And the price extremely reasonable for what you get. 6 stars.
That said, a little wall art would go a long way for ambience. For now, just focus on the fish.
