Their brisket compares favorably with any of the high end famous places I've been to in Texas. I wasn't too excited about their Gold Sauce, which is apparently their specialty, but it was great, and their lesser known hickory sauce was also well above average. The mac and cheese was also very good.
We stopped in while traveling. My wife and I shared the sampler and wing basket. We took home a lot of food. Ribs, pork and ribs were tasty. The wings were truly BBQ not fried. Loved them. I would return many times.
Saw the sign on the way home and we're so glad we stopped!!! Great bbq sandwich and hushpuppies. My wife loved the home made strawberry shortcake and our pup loved the pork bones they sell. We actually turned around and bought a pound to go. We will definitely go back next time we're driving through!!!
All I know.... I grew up in Columbia, SC in the mid & late 80's and moved to Greenville in the mid-90's. Every time I visit Columbia I either hit Maurice's or Rush's for awesome food I cannot get in the upstate. Thanks to Maurice, growing up I didn't know any other form of BBQ existed other than mustard-based! You could get his products in grocery stores in the upstate until grocery chains pussed out on the flag issue and dropped his line. I support the flag and there is nothing wrong with having southern pride. You have to try this BBQ, it is the best!
We drive out of our way to stop at the Piggie Park every time we pass through South Carolina. The BBQ is amazing and the hash is outrageous (I don't even know what the hash even is!).
Maurice's BBQ makes ME HAPPY!. I am a Charlotte native and a Dallas, TX resident and a huge BBQ SNOB! I love Maurice's like crazy. I will drive 90 mins each way from CLT just to eat lunch there. Their Q' is moist and mustardy. Slaw is great as is iced tea and fried pork skins...that's right! Real and hot and crixpy and made right there! Hooboy! It don't get much more hillbilly than that...and I am down with that! Go and get yer pig on and be prepared to smile. And Maurice is a fine Southern Gentleman too!
Vegas
South Carolina BBQ at it's best. As a Texan, I was skeptical of this "Carolina BBQ" stuff, and they make it with Mustard? It was introduced by my wife's family and when we visited Cayce we went to Piggy Park. I am now completely sold on Mustard / Vinegar based BBQ sauce. The food at Piggy Park was great, all the traditional southern sides, even fatback. Good good food.
I have been wanting to try Maurice Bessinger's Piggie Park for a while. Maurice's Barbecue is a mustard-based barbecue, and as I am sure you can tell from the name, primarily pork. On our recent vacation, we planned on stopping at the original in Columbia
