I agree with the 3.5 rating that the restaurant had when I looked it up on zomato- not the greatest, but not too bad.
The hot salsa wasn't. I didn't try the mild, but the hot sauce was pretty much tomato paste with a little bit of spices. Chips were good.
I had the Thursday lunch special, which was a junior Monterey for $5.88! And the junior Monterrey still filled your plate up.
The Monterey was a bit heavy on lettuce and beans, and a little short on cheese, so I asked for some extra cheese, and my waitress brought me a little salsa Bowl full of cheese for $0.99. The cheese was soft, melty, and salty, I wouldn't doubt it was shredded American cheese, but it wasn't bad. I had the mild pork, and it was okay. There was a fair amount of meat on the Monterey for a supposedly "Junior" Monterrey.
All in all, I wasn't super impressed, but I would stop in for lunch on a Thursday to get the same deal. Not bad at all for the money.
Also, my waitress was very quick and friendly, and my water was never empty. I tipped her a little over 20%.
Can't believe Cholitas is rated so low. No way sane people think Connies is better. Granted asking for the house sauce is required but the dinners are way better. The ham flautas are excellent.
They are great! where did the bad reviews come from?. Seriously people? Is it competition writing these? I have been eating here for years and they have great food! Service is always good.....and, when I dine in I always have to wait to order dinner otherwise it comes out promptly and hot while I am still chomping on their chips. For the hater who held their queso upsided down....Yup ....the queso is thick...(thanks for not watering it down, y'all)...I always add some of their salsa to it Good food....great service and reasonable prices. Just goes to show you cant always trust what you read....the other reviews are way off.
Closest thing to authentic Mexican in Wichita. If you order a burrito or something generic, don't expect much and just go to Taco Bell. Great tamales.
LOVE THIS FOOD!. I moved from Wichita 10 yrs ago and I crave this food! I love the fried flour tacos. I have never found them anywhere else so when we come home to visit I always have to eat there. I also love the Monterrey with the pork. Yum. Also, I haven't seen them on the menu but if you ask they will fry you up a basket of flour tortilla chips to dip in the salsa. YUM!! Hot and crispy! This is a very casual place so dont worry about getting dressed up or planning a fancy meal, just good food!
If you like La Chinita, you'll like Cholita's. Same family recipes. You have to pick and choose otherwise you can get some pretty underwhelming dishes. They make awesome classic deep fried tacos. Also, it's not on the menu, but ask for a bowl of "kitchen sauce". It's a kind of pork chile. You won't regret it.
Fried flour tacos are the best. They even make fried flour tostadas! I substitute my own cheese and add tomatoes at home. My sister loves the beans.

Great, traditional Mexican fare. Made fresh. Friendly staff. The salsa is very good, but the hot is Very hot... at least to us.
Love the Monterrey, but it is more than it originally looks... it's huge!
Haven't had a bad meal here yet. I got started coming here in the mid 80s. The food has been consistently wonderful!
