Dare try the Riverside. Probably one of the few remaining places in northern lower Michigan where you can still get a good, stiff, cheap drink, a great pizza, sing karaoke and still catch a real-life bar room brawl all in one sitting. (And if you happen to be a bounty hunter, it's also a great place to go if you maybe want to bump into your prey.)
This is definitely the #1 place to people watch and meet some incredible, homegrown characters-like they just wallked out of a Steinbeck novel kinda characters.
The atmosphere is definitely "backwoods" Michigan; the open air deck overlooking the Crooked River is a terrific and scenic spot to step out and take your drink-or your date-for some fresh air in-between the karaoke set and bar room brawls.
But bring along an industrial strength can of Lysol and a big bottle of Purel if you dare take your life in your own hands and use the bathrooms!
WARNING: Not for the faint hearted and absolutely not a place to take your kids, especially at night; senior citizens, prudes and fudgies probably should go elsewhere.
If you do brave having drinks and dinner at the Riverside Bar & Grill, (which locals fondly refer to as "The River Bottom") it's certainly worth it just for the awesome pizza, great drinks, classic characters and priceless "old west" style environment.
Bartender was by himself but took good care of us. Great burgers!
We came by boat and the outside looked pretty sketchy. We almost didn't stop. There wasn't table service but the bartender was friendly. Nice liqour selection. The gouda cheese bites and pizza were amazing!!
