My husband and I lived in Ft. Worth TX for 10 years, lived & travelled to many places, had some fantastic BBQ. Never had a Reuben at a BBQ place before! It was incomparably delicious! Smoky pastrami, homemade sauerkraut, on marbled rye. I doubt I will ever eat a better sandwich. The ribs my husband had were tender, smoky, falling off the bone.
Stopped at Farmhouse Antiques and was told to try Smoke BBQ on King St. She said ask for Mike or Roland they have the best BBQ in South Carolina.Turns out she is their Mother. She was also right. Smoke had the BEST BBQ I have ever tasted. Wings to die for. I had a Ruben to go along with the wings and was not disappointed. A shot of their own whiskey and some ice tea made the meal complete. Place was clean and neat. Waitress was right on point with info of food choices as well as service. Very pleased and would recommend Smoke to anyone looking for great food and people.
Amazing food and service, best BBQ food I’ve tasted and the grits are to die for. If I’m ever back in Charleston I’ll be back for more.
Great smoked wings and ribs. Service was very good and the draft beer selection, while limited, had some good craft beers. Liked the family and casual atmosphere.
Loved the local beer, sampler, and I still can't get the Reuben out of my head. Can't wait to go back and get it again.
We bought into the hype and visited Rodney Scott’s BBQ in Charleston. This was actually the reason we stopped and stayed in SC overnight on our way to Florida was so we could come here for dinner.
You never know when a place or a name starts to get a lot of stardom and attention and begins to expand, how the quality of food will translate and keep up. But we were very happy with our experience. We got the family feast platter, and was very happy with the quality and quantity of the food for the price. It fed our family of 4 no problem and we had extras to take home.
We of course came for the pork, which did not disappoint. The pulled pork as well as the ribs and sausage were great! Didn’t even need sauce but we used some anyways to try his flavours. The brisket was okay, but you don’t come here for the brisket. The sides were also good, we especially liked the hush puppies and the kids really enjoyed the Mac and cheese and seasoned fries.
The setting and vibe was really great inside the restaurant. No issues getting seating and the staff were very friendly.
We would definitely come here again, just wish they had some merchandise to purchase on the store we definitely would have bought some.
Being a Texan I have had the pleasure to visit some incredible BBQ spots, as well as all the other major BBQ cities in the country. So naturally Rodney Scott’s was on the list when we visited SC. I’ve watched videos about this restaurant on Netflix, YouTube, and most every BBQ publication around, with everyone talking up the whole hog BBQ! Coming from TX brisket is king, so coming somewhere that specializes in pork was a change of pace.
The pork itself was incredible, it had the flavor profile and perfect amount of moisture. Easily the best pork sandwich I have ever had!
The BBQ sauces were excellent as well!
Good outdoor seating. Some of the best turkey I've had. Game Day wing special (6 for $6) was great & the dry rub didn't need a sauce!
We wanted to try out some BBQ while visiting Charleston and we're glad we came here! It's an inconspicuous location, with limited parking (you can park across the street at the grocery store) and a small interior, but the food is great and totally worth a visit. We tried the chicken and the turkey, and both were excellent. The assortment of BBQ sauces are a great complement as well. They also have a few beers on tap which was much appreciated. There was a small line of people when we arrived, but it moved quickly and we got our food pretty fast after ordering. Overall if you're a BBQ fan, you need to check this place out!
Drove all the way from New York and made sure to stop over and have some great BBQ! Me and the wife loved the food so much! Would always be one of the places to visit whenever we fly to the US.
The food was worth every bite and would travel 8,600 miles again for this!
Whole hog pork plate was a melange of tastes in my mouth. The mac and cheese was very good and hearty and the greens were great also. Really enjoyed the differing sauces as i used each liberally throughout the meal. Great barn and service with a smile too. They really want you to enjoy your experience. Well done Rodney Scott team, well Done !!
This is My first restaurant during My first time in Charleston. The restaurant was clean, the bathroom was clean. The cashier was very helpful because I had a hard time making choices. I had the three-meat combo with Ribs, Turkey, and pulled pork with greens and mac and cheese. Those greens were everything. The sauce options were very unique. The food came out quick and hot. They have indoor and outdoor seating.

Ordered the brisket plate with two sides (Mac and cheese/potato salad) and an order of 6 wings. Simply put it was all excellent! The brisket was tender, Smokey, seasoned well with a nice bark. The sides were excellent and the wings were seasoned well, Smokey and tasty. I highly recommend when visiting Charleston SC. True old style pit cooked with love.
Finally made time to stop by and was more impressed than I expected to be. I knew the food would be good, but I was also floored by how great the service was and the family oriented nature of the place. My 7 YO had plenty of options while Mom and dad got to enjoy the BBQ.
The Whole Hog pork was easily the best I've ever had. While I've had a lot of good BBQ in the past, Rodney Scott's was just the most well rounded. Flavorful, moist, tender, it was a true delight to eat. Somehow i didn't leave feeling overly "heavy" which is usually a staple of big BBQ meals. Would recommend 10/10
There is something that puzzles me about Rodney Scott's BBQ in Charleston. Why is a disco ball hanging in the dining room? Maybe I should have asked an employee, but I didn't. Other than the disco ball, everything at Rodney Scott's made sense. The dining area is comfortable and casual. It was nearly full when we dined there on a Sunday mid-afternoon, and some people had ventured outside to dine on the outside tables. It was a very warm summer day, so I was impressed that the picnic-style outdoor tables had fans to help keep the diners comfortable. Very nice! Our party split the Pitmaster Combo, which includes a variety of smoked meats and four sides. Everything was delicious, though the brisket was a touch on the dry side. The chicken and turkey, however, were moist and flavorful and the pulled pork was lean. We especially enjoyed the flavorful sausage that came with the combo. For sides, we got mac and cheese, collard greens, fries, and baked beans. All were very good. The flavor of the collard greens and baked beans complimented the smoked meats nicely, and the seasoning on the crispy fries was really good. All in all, Rodney Scott's BBQ is an excellent choice for some southern barbecue! But what's up with that disco ball?
Update:
Rodney Scott is a BBQ legend. If you consider yourself a BBQ fan, go to Rodney Scott’s Whole Hog BBQ in Charleston. Here’s why:
TL/DR:
Alice Morrison and I first tasted Rodney’s ‘whole hog’ BBQ at his original Hemingway SC pit. Rustic and real as you can tell from the photo. Classic. And the world beat a path to his door.
And so did James Beard, who awarded him the ‘Best in the SouthEast’ designation—and that’s for ALL chefs, not just BBQ.
Fast forward and Rodney was a star at Music to your Mouth festival in Palmetto Bluff SC and then opened his storefront in Charleston.
Great news! His food hasn’t lost a step even with all the accolades. (and he looks fitter and happier than ever)
Today we finally visited Rodney Scott’s Whole Hog BBQ Charleston and are thankful we did. Cashier Chris helped us through the menu. We had a half-rack of spare ribs (fantastic) and his signature outstanding pulled/chopped whole hog. Got some brisket to go. Cole slaw side, which was excellent. Our favorite sauces were ‘Rodney’s’ which’s a classic vinegar-based (I’d use it as a mop and a sauce on just about anything) and the ‘Other’ (spicy savory).
We actually put some Rodney sauce on the slaw to tang it up a notch.
We were there at a (relatively) slow time. Meaning all tables filled but no long line and Noella was kind enough to arrange a tour of the pit. It was great to see the next generation learning their craft—and none better for them to learn from than the pit master himself.
Happy for Rodney and very happy for everyone who now gets to visit Rodney Scott’s when in Charleston.
Rodney Scott’s Whole Hog BBQ Charleston is a must-visit for every barbecue fan!
Before our visit:
We’re looking forward to checking out Rodney’s place in Charleston today. The stars are for the great Que we had at his old Hemingway location and the wonderful time he shared with us at Music to Your Mouth a few years back.
Arrived for a late lunch for 4. We ordered the Pitmaster Combo which is a lot of food and a whole chicken also. The Combo has pretty much everything, 2 types pork, brisket, turkey, cheese sausage, chicken, and Ribs. It was all so excellent, the chicken so moist and delicious with the white bbq sauce it is do good. Can't say enough about how rich and good the bbq is. For sides we had the fries which are seasoned uniquely, mac and cheese, slaw, and Collards. The collards were for me, but it turns out that 2 people at the table who "don't like" collards almost ate all of them. They are without a doubt the best. Finished off with a banana pudding which sounds childish, but the flavors presented are subtle and nuanced. That is a dessert to go back for. Very happy we will come back. It's great to walk by the pits after parking and smell the smells. The manager came around to say hello which is also great to see these days.
Restrooms were clean and tidy I give them an A
Rodney Scott’s had really great BBQ! We tried their ribs, pulled pork, brisket, beans, & Mac & Cheese! I would recommend the pulled pork & the ribs! Their banana pudding was absolute fire! Everyone here was very friendly! Will come here again!
Many people take issue with saying that any particular thing in life is “the best”. All I can say is that you will not find better BBQ of any kind than Rodney Scott’s. There may be others that reach the same level of flavor, but they will not be better. My wife enjoyed the whole hog pulled pork, the baked beans and Collard greens. I had a combo of pulled pork, brisket and ribs along with collards and coleslaw. All of the flavors, as mentioned before, were ideal. I was most struck by the flavor of the ribs, not only the crust or char on the outside, but the internal flavor. At times, it was like eating steak. Even their cracklins and pork skins are fantastic.
I also love the fact that it was in a neighborhood across from a Food Lion and a school. There was nothing flashy about it at all. It was all about serving exceptional food in a friendly and fast way, in a relaxed setting.
Be sure to get there right at 11, if possible - the line forms quickly.
A must do when in the Charleston area.

We had the pulled pork and ribs with potato salad and mac & cheese. The pork was great! The ribs were some of the best we ever had! The side were some of the best we ever had, too. We also had the banana puddin'. It's to die for! GREAT GREAT FOOD!!!
It would be 5 stars if I was only rating the wings, they were some of the best I’ve bet had. The dry rub was spot on! We ordered a platter with ribs, brisket, pulled pork, fries, cornbread and collard greens. The pulled pork was amazing and the ribs were very good! All of the sides were decent but the brisket was dried out we were expecting much better.
Another BBQ Bucket List visit achieved!
🐷 🔥 Ordered the 3-meat plate so I could sample whole hog, shoulder & ribs. All very moist and seasoned well. Rodney Scott's BBQ was definitely worth the hype to me as far as South Carolina’s Pork Master!!! 🙌
