A beautiful State Capitol to visit
This is not only easy to find, it is hard to miss. It is the State Capitol and dominated the skyline along the river. It is the building with the large dome in the middle of the state capitol complex located Kanawha Blvd E. There is street parking and a parking garage off of Greenbrier street. It is a short walk past the Veteran’s memorial and the West Virginia State Museum. I would highly recommend paying your respects to the former and spending a good amount of time visiting the latter. We entered through the West entrance. You go through a security checkpoint and then can go to see both chambers or the various offices of the building. It is a beautiful building in the style of many state capitals. We were lucky to arrive when the crystal light for the central rotunda was at ground level and the chandeliers in both chambers were being replaced. Around the rotunda are several display cases showing sights for the various places in the state. There was an information booth on the north side of the rotunda. If you are new to the area, they can give you ideas of things to do and see for the state. The staff was very friendly and it is a wonderful working capitol building.
I really enjoyed my experience here. I was happy they were open Sundays, when I visited, but there was nobody there, so I practically had the place to myself. I enjoyed the cool diversity in statues and memorials, it reflects the neat history of WV very well in opinion. It’s a strange thing when the WV Capitol has more statues of Confederates than Virginia’s, and I’d say they’re better off for it, they force you think about the men which they depict. The veteran’s memorial was really excellent, I enjoyed seeing that one especially, and the coal miners memorial was unique to the Mountain State. There was also a chestnut tree planted in memory of those who perished in the Upper Big Branch disaster, which surprised me because of the chestnut, but was very nice. The Lincoln statue is very cool, especially when one reads the poem “Lincoln Walks at Midnight.” Very much worth your time, cheers.
This was my first time visiting the WV Capitol. We were passing through on a road trip from Texas and decided to check it out. It was very ornate and beautiful. It seemed like we were the only tourists there, but every staff person we encountered was very polite. We also visited the gift shop at the museum which had some lovely locally-made souvenirs.
