Stopped in this Diner for an early dinner.
What a pleasant surprise.
Very generous portions and a very friendly staff. (A tip of the hat), to our server Chris. She really made the meal enjoyable .
Did I mention 'generous portions ' ? There is enough food for two nights !
I highly recommend you give Lance's Diner a try if you find yourself in the neighborhood of S. Federal at Evan's Blvd.
Let me just start by saying the food was fantastic. We loved every bite and we will be back. My gripes are nit-picky and are attributed to newer, younger staff, something that is not a deal breaker. Don't get me wrong, we really liked the food.
However, this little diner is right of the street and easy to find. Its a small 1 room area with a bar where they have the cash register setup. Most of the staff is high school students, a attribute I love to see, encouraging and supporting high school age students to work! We were greeted immediately when we walked in, provided menus, and even asked if we wanted a booth or table.
We ordered the gyro omelette, which will a tad bit salty, had fantastic flavor and truly was delicious. For the side, we ordered pancakes and fresh fruit. The pancakes were good, smaller sized pancakes, similar to an IHOP pancake, but they were not anything super special. The fruit was fresh, however - a typical small cup size portion.
The second item we ordered to share was the strawberry crepes. I'm still on the fence with these, they were not super sweet. They were not my favorite, but the wife enjoyed that they were not overly sweet as a breakfast item, which is understandable. However, my main gripe is with the plating for this dish. When it came out, there were 2 crepes on the plate, stuff with strawberries and whip cream. They were folded into a quarter type sandwich as you can probably see from the pictures. But the potatoes (home fries) were practically sitting in the whip cream. This left the potatoes on the crepes side a bit on the soggy side. The rest of the potatoes without the whip cream were great. I can't say that I will order crepes again, when there are other items that are so delicious for the same price.
My last thing of note is that after our tasty plates were delivered, our waitress came back just a minute or so after and asked if everything was okay, and then we never saw her again. I eventually got up and asked the person behind the counter for an extra plate so we could put syrup on one, without making all the leftovers soggy. The syrup container had a broken lid and when we picked it up, it fell off and we nearly spilled it all over. Again, nobody was nearby and by shear luck, I assume the manager (a female who seemed quite nice), pulled someones attention that we were asking for some help with the syrup.
Overall, it was a great breakfast and brings memories to when I worked at a similar place in high school. We will be back, but I cannot give a 5 start rating as I wasn't blown away by the things noted above.
A real gem. I was truly impressed. The Gyro and Feta Omelette was rich and delicious. The home fries were cooked just right, and my coffee cup was never lacking. The owner herself was pleasant and took it upon herself to ask about my meal and top off my coffee. And the pricing is fair for how much you get. I will certainly be returning and recommending my friends to this fantastic little diner as well!
