In a sea of places designed to cater to the mainstream, even in a pre-gentrification Detroit, places that bow down to the almighty sports dollar, that demand of their entertainment a dumbing down, a white wash, a normalization...UFO has always stood out for me as a place where outsider expression was appreciated and encouraged in an environment that was accepting and pushed boundaries that a strictly capitalist venture are not supposed to push. This all happened in a non threatening manner, where if you wanted to dive into "something else," it doesn't matter if you dwell strictly in the underground or not, you can find a wonderful night here. Beautiful relics adorn the walls including an original Magma poster with most vertical surfaces painted silver. A quality sound system delivers live music you won't hear anywhere else. A lovingly curated jukebox keeps the ambience lively and interesting. Always worthy art shows that leaned towards pop. A well stocked bar and delicious food available day or night. Any self respecting urban neighborhood would die to have this sort of touchstone as its centerpiece for years and years. Long live UFO Factory.
Important meeting place for Detroit culture. Great music, art, and food. You can wear a gown or cutoffs and everything in between. Ideas are born here.
UFO is the perfect venue and bar for a low key good time any night of the week, I especially love karaoke Sundays, their endless popcorn and the bar staff-- and their brunch rules and their ultra famous bathroom is irresistible for mandatory selfies. Living down the street has really made this a go-to staple in the neighborhood.
