Fantastic restaurant in the heart of downtown Durham. We enjoyed every tapa we ordered, even though for some of them we really didn't know what to expect. I recommend to get several different ones, then share with your date. The absolute best was this arroz with chorizo, nuts, manchego, and an egg on top of it (I wish I remembered the name. I went on their online menu, but couldn't find it ) The explosion of different textures and flavors was just out of this world. Their cheerwine sangria was also a treat. It's very loud and lively inside, definitely not a place to hold an intimate conversation, but definitely a place to treat yourself with some delicious food that won't stop entertaining your taste buds.
An unbelievable food experience. I’ve yet to have a tapa that isn’t a flavor explosion. The staff always makes strong recommendations, from which item to order to which drink to pair with it. To demonstrate how committed the staff is, my wife and I were guided through some menu items by a bartender who had just finished her shift. She’s there as a customer at that point, and still continues to help us have a great meal. It is a mistake to not eat at Mateo.
First Time here... was a Little apprehensive because the menu was so different (lol) however what we got was very tasty and the atmosphere and staff were awesome.
