I tried eating my way around the island for several weeks, all while having shave ice for desert when I could. I've come to enjoy Uncle Clay's shave ice the most. They might not have the finest ice, but they do have some of the best flavors. After talking to the workers, it turns out that their syrups are the best because they actually make them themselves with natural fruit from the island, and this is exactly the experience I came to get at the island on vacation. Great flavor, friendly service, and all for a good cause. I will keep coming back to this place as much as I can.
The prices are very reasonable for how much shaved ice you get. The ice cream has a distinct, thick texture and tastes really nice combined with the shaved ice. Uncle Clay expressed his gratitude towards us the first time we ordered here, and there's a real sense of compassion and quality at this place. Overall, it's a really good, friendly place to get a tasty sweet treat; perfect for summer.
The shave ice at Uncle Clay’s HOPA is really, really, really good. It just not great. It is the best I’ve had on Oahu, but it doesn’t measure up to the standard set on the island of Maui.
The flavor options at Uncle Clay’s are outstanding and combining ice cream with the shave ice is the right move as is their commitment to being environmentally friendly. So why not 5 stars? Because the shave ice is not as fine as powdered snow, it’s closer to icee fine than powdered snow and that makes a difference. The strawberry syrup used on the shave ice was not as flavorful as it could’ve / should’ve been. I also think putting the shave ice in top of the ice cream is better than using the ice cream as a topping.
The shave ice is very visually appealing and it is as good an option as I’ve found on Oahu. Combining the shave ice with the ice cream and the fruit and marshmallows makes for a powerful and satisfying option any time, but especially so on a warm day.
The ice cream at Uncle Clay’s is outstanding whether in cup or cone. The service was fast and friendly, and you can sit inside or out to consume you old concoction. Worth the drive, but still some work to do to get the the top of the mountain.
