ChuckWagon BBQ is an excellent restaurant in this genre.
The BBQ pork was fresh on our visit today and the ribs were as well. The taste was excellent and there was a lot of meat. An order of ribs is about one pound so the number of ribs served depends on the weight. This order had about six ribs and had a lot of meat on the bones!
We were there for a late lunch and the restaurant closes about 2 PM. The line was short but the food was hot and the employees were friendly and smiling.
The ribs were a little dry; I suspect if we had been there an hour earlier that would not have been the case though.
The sandwich has an optional addition of onions, jalapeno and pickle as well as slaw. As a traditionalist, I went with vinegar slaw only and fully enjoyed the sandwich without having my mouth burn from the pepper.
It is set up as a buffet type of line and the customer places an order, watches the meat being cut up and placed on a bun or plate, and then pay the cashier at the end.
The ambiance is comfortable. Country music was playing the background (from the 80's and 90's), the service was quick and friendly, and the booths were comfortable.
The iced tea was very good as well.
The sign noting that guns are welcome may make some customers feel uneasy. It probably adds to the charm for those who like a good BBQ meal.
Recently moved from GA and have been underwhelmed at every BBQ place I've been this far. Finally came to Chuckwagon after hearing their song on the radio. Simply put, amazing! I got the Chuck Wagon sandwich with the spicy sausage on the side with baked beans and Mac n cheese. The brisket was perfectly cooked. It was tender and tasted like meat candy with good smoke flavor. It didn't need sauce but they have three red sauces at each table if you'd like some. The sausage was delicious, not too spicy, but had a good tingle. The Mac n cheese is perfect and I'm sure my kids would love it. The cost was what I was expecting for good barbecue and once I tasted the quality of their food I had no doubt it was worth every penny. My new favorite BBQ restaurant. The only teeny tiny issue I had was the lack of caffeine free drinks. I got the lemonade which is good but I could have gone for a sprite. Overall, a 9.9 out of 10.
Long story: wound up in wayyyy south Huntsville for a Walmart pickup because there were no time slots available at my neighborhood location. Naturally, my order was delayed, so I found myself out there with nothing to do. Nothing, that is, except grab lunch at a bbq spot I'd never tried before!
I've heard about Chuckwagon for years. It's supposed to be the only place in town to get legit Texas style brisket. This one in south Huntsville is actually run by the son of the owner of the original location. The original Chuckwagon is out in Madison.
I did at first try to go through the drive through but no one seemed to be manning it. Everyone's understaffed right now so I don't really hold it against them.
The interior commits to the whole Texas identity thing, to the point where it's almost a bit. It's kinda cute though and I can definitely see little kids loving all the cowboy silhouettes and horse statues and so on.
The service was very friendly, if maybe a little slow. I think they were more held up by the lady in front of me rather than an unwillingness to move quickly, though; she was really chatty lol. One of the girls told me about all the cheeses and the Rotel that goes in the mac while I waited, which totally sold me.
Texas brisket is...whatever. Family's from Memphis so we tend not to go there, lol. I'm a pork bbq lady, myself. So that's what I ordered: a pork plate with mac and cheese and green beans, with jalapeño cornbread and a sweet tea to drink.
I took it out to my car to minimize potential exposure and ate there while I waited. Overall, I was pretty pleased with my meal. The mac and cheese was a tiny bit greasy (that's what happens with that much cheese though, haha), but flavorful with a light kick. The green beans were well seasoned, too -- nice. Most of the time they really need salt or SOMETHING, but these were good and not stringy or under/over cooked. The jalapeño cornbread was a bit soggy but had great flavor: the bread was slightly sweet with nice whole corn kernels and it definitely had a jalapeño kick. My medium heat bbq sauce struck the right consistency, sweetness, and spiciness. The pork was a little bit greasy and fatty for my ~ideal~ preferences, but I'm very picky and critical with bbq, and this was overall a good offering that I'd definitely order again. Tender, generous portions, not super smoky but definitely smoke flavor present, and it paired well with the bbq sauce. My partner enjoyed the portion I didn't finish and brought home for him, haha.
Chuckwagon is worth your time if you're a bbq fan like myself. Brisket fans will have to try that out and let me know how it goes, lol. I'd definitely stop by again if I found myself nearby.
