BLT in a Sack. Its bacon, lettuce and tomato in a pita fold with mayo I believe
I have been eating at this place since I was a child. I'm 31 now if that tells you anything, with a child of my own who enjoys going here. George, Mama and Pops (as they are known) are always a delight. Often, on a Saturday, you can catch Pops trying to solve the world's problems with a quick wit. It's not a fancy place by any means. It's comfortable. I am a somewhat regular but these people always make anyone feel at home. The Steak in a Sac is a must... Steak cooked on the griddle with onions, cheese and topped with banana peppers, served in a pita. Make sure to get the combo as the fries are excellent. Cherry Limeade is the perfect compliment.
I will be back!!. Traveling a lot on the road, I prefer to find great local eateries. Today I'm glad I visited this one! I've driven past the Sandwich House many times during visits to Jacksonville. It's quaint 1960's diner facade suggests it's been around awhile, it has its regulars, and the food must be tried and true. If you've wondered the same thing, you're completely right on all counts. This is a great, family run business. The folks making your food love what they do, and they love the people that visit. You could tell by the regulars they were talking with, and their personability as they addressed me. Today I ordered a Turkey and Cheese Rider with Bacon, a simple assembly of basic ingredients in a thin but supple pita pocket that didn't dominate the sandwich's taste. From the sounds of things, I could get something similar at Subway or any old sandwich shop, right? Wrong. This tasted like a homemade sandwich made by mom in her kitchen with the taste of a fresh cut tomato, fresh lettuce, and real mayo. There was no hint of it being made at a diner, except that it came wrapped in waxed paper and a toothpick. Anything wrapped in waxed paper from a diner has to be good, and you know they've been doing it this way for years. Also, one of the kickers between this quaint diner and franchise food is the quality of bacon when it's put in a sandwich. This bacon was real, cooked on a griddle that day, with the crispness still in the bacon fat. There was none of that microwaved flat mediocre bacon. Who knew such a simple sandwich could be so good? I'll be back, next time for the steak and onions they had cooking on the griddle as I left. It looked divine, again like something you know they've been doing for years and getting repeat business. I can see this becoming a "must go to" every time I'm in town!
