Again, after at least 17 years. We went to the original Lone Star Oyster Bar on 34th for dinner around 5pm on a Sunday. This was my first visit in almost 2 decades despite dining the immediate area often.
Menu is much better than what it used to be, service was great for a bar/pub, and the food was surprisingly very good.
The chicken-fried-chicken was tender and breaded properly and the mashed potatoes and salad as sides were great. My wife had the Swamp Cat (catfish) and all was very good. I can't wait to give their chicken-fried steak a try next. (I don't eat oysters or much seafood. By the way, they were out of oysters when we visited!)
We'll start returning to this old haunt often. Good pub grub, low drink prices, and you can smoke a cigar. Non-smokers stay away, we don't want you there.
Saturday Special!!. Service is routinely horrible and it takes forever to get waited on BUT the 34th St location of the O Bar has a special every single Saturday that makes it worth it -- half price raw oysters!!! EVERY SATURDAY!! In my teens and early twenties, I was a waitress so I understand about being busy etc. but I've only found one waitress who has been good here, and she was awesome (i think her name is brandy but i could be completely wrong). All of the others tend to have attitudes and are SLOOOOOOOOW to wait on you and SLOOOOOOOOW to check back on you. The ONLY reason I put up with it is to satisfy my cravings for raw oysters and horseradish every month.
UPDATE! Wait staff have gotten friendlier! Brittney was fantastic this past saturday (04/30/11) and said she works every Saturday. Be sure to go in and ask for her if there is more than one person waiting tables ... she is friendly and attentive! As always, you can't go wrong with the raw oysters, fried zucchini sticks, hot shrimp, and crawfish (with potatoes and onions).
Cool lubbock bar. You can smoke indoors on one side and on their patios. The oysters were fresh from the Gulf Coast, a little big in my opinion. Not a fan of the really giant oysters that you need to chew to get down the hatch, but these oysters were really fresh. Good selection of beer from cans of Keystone Light and PBR to craft brews on tap. REALLY GOOD cocktails 🍸. Wife had a few Ginger and 7's that were made perfectly. They do get really busy on the weekends, but it's a good time. Bar tenders were all super friendly and nice, great service. Definitely a good bar to have a drink and hang out with friends.
