Food is decent. Nothing spectacular, but just solid. I've had a couple different subs and I've enjoyed each one.
Couple of oddities about this place.
1) You get fries with your sub, but only if you're eating at the restaurant. If you get it to go, you have to pay for your fries separately. Seems like a bizarre policy.
2) It is cash only. There is an ATM in the restaurant...but just be aware of their cash only policy. Personally, I find it to be annoying, but there are more "cash only" restaurants in Pittsburgh than I've seen anywhere else.
Even with those 2 things, it's still good food, fairly fast, and a big enough place that you'll have no issue finding a seat.
Surprised!. After leaving the Squirrel Hill library I realized I was hungry and just wanted a sandwich, a comfortable chair and a table to read my paperback mystery. I decided to go across the street to Uncle Sam's but without any great expectations ( no pun intended). I was all set for a mediocre sub but to my surprise I really enjoyed my cheesesteak. The sub was large and overflowed with fried onions, green peppers, hot peppers and lots of steak. The mass of fries made me feel guilty as I gobbled them up swathed in ketchup. The young staff behind the orderind counter were polite and efficient, and the prices were reasonable considering the size of the portions. Ok - its not the healthiest of all food but once a year one can splurge on calories. In a nutshell Uncle Sam was damn good!
Love this place!. I have had their cheese steak in many variations, and their veggie subs as well. Each and every one was delicious! Also their bread is always soft and tasty. i have never been let down by uncle Sam! Affordable and sooo good.
