This food is scrumptious! Getting all the elements in a bight is so balanced. The red tea cuts the heat from the slaw. The slaw is a spicy medium. It has habanero in it just enough to taste the tropical flavor of the pepper. It never got beyond a medium spicy level like you'd get in a spicy Thai place. My wife got the tofu and I got the chicken. Can't wait to order again

I usually go to places a fair amount of trips to fully understand what they're all about. If a place has me inspired to go there a few times a week, it's a keeper. Now, Jouk Li Jou (Haitian CookShack Cafe), somehow when you chit-chat with small business, your order gets customized automatically. I must confess that I visit this place on a daily basis, simply because it's quicker for me and more eco-friendly rather than washing a dish or two after every meal. Home cooked meal, no matter its origins, is still a home cooked meal. My current favorite is the roasted chicken. The owner also has homemade non-alcoholic drinks too, changes daily.

I got the chicken plate and everything was so flavorful. The chicken was juicy and the sauce has a wonderful kick to it. I will definitely be going back!

Their goat curry with rice, beans and sweet potato salad is my new favorite dish! Yum!!!! Mathilda, the owner, is also super sweet. And for those who care most all what they sell (if not all) is gluten free.

Haitian food in Portland, Oregon!! Best Haitian food we've had in a long time. My family and I tried almost everything from griot to oxtail and the food was absolutely delicious. Mathilde, the owner, was just fantastic. Keep it up!

Stop whatever you're doing, and go visit Mathilde right now! I'd never had Haitian food before, but ever since my first griot plate, I haven't been able to shut up about it. Seriously, ask anyone. They're sick of hearing about it. Until they try it themselves, and then they understand. Even if you've never had this food before, it'll taste like home. Just don't plan on doing anything afterward except floating off into your warm, happy place. Fair warning, though, it's addictive. Who needs heroin when you have Haitian food?

This place is special. Every time I visit Portland I eat here. I could eat here every day. The dishes are home style like your mom cooked for you. The lady who works here is so sweet and friendly. You must try it!

My first taste of Haitian food. I agree with the other reviewer, Kjell. The goat curry was fantastic. Going back tomorrow. A new favorite eating establishment.

Jouk Li Jou reminds me of my family's cooking back in NY. The owner is an amazing lady and she does it right! I'm slowly getting my friends into Haitian dishes and so far they are loving it. I really thought there was no Caribbean food ever in Portland....I was wrong and bless her for opening a second location in my neighborhood. Merci!!!

We drove an hour all the way from Newberg for this Haitian food! It was everything we hoped for and more! So delicious! Diri ak pwa, banann peze, pikliz, poul--Rice and beans, fried plantains, pickled coleslaw, roasted chicken! All seasoned perfectly the Haitian way. And the warm Haitian welcome we received from Mathilde and the rest of the Haitian community that was there to eat was wonderful. Thank you. We will be back!

I can't say enough. Especially if you've had Haitian food and want the real thing again, this is it! Stews, legum, phenomenal. My girlfriend lived a year in Haiti, teaching, and we happened upon Mathilde and her wonderful food and stories...Jess was lost on the moment, the language, the food, and I actually got to experience just a "taste" of it all. Thank you!
