I love this place! I have dined at Salt and Forge several times since they've opened and each time the food has been nothing but amazing and delicious. The staff is friendly and welcoming as well as knowledgeable about menu items. They have a great selection of drinks (beer and cider) in their cooler which include many local businesses.
I love the grilled cheese as well as the brisket sandwich! Their biscuits are homemade and have lots of butter, the way they are supposed to be made. The brûléed grapefruit wedge that they currently have as the fruit option is brilliant as well as tasty. Next time I dine at Salt and Forge, I'm going to try one of their salads, if I can force myself away from the grilled cheese.
This was my first visit and it was amazing! The grilled cheese....YUM! And the Vadalia Onion Bisque is to die for. Fun ambiance and top notch service. The owners came out and sat down with us too. I highly recommend!
An excellent spot for delicious and thoughtfully made food. Very clean and modern. The breakfast sandwiches with biscuit are a must try. The owner, David, was super welcoming, and they are one of few places that offer fresh Counter Culture coffee in Richmond, which is my favorite east coast coffee roaster. An all around great experience.
Loved the classic sandwhich menu so much we came back for breakfast the next morning highly recommend the Croque Monsieur; its a cheese lovers dream!
We went to Salt and Forge while visiting Richmond. I have to say the brisket sandwich was delicious and the potato salad and Cole slaw was fresh and tasty. The place is inviting and the owners make you feel at home. I live in New York but cannot wait to visit again. Definitely worth a trip back to Richmond.
I went after several co-workers raved about it after the first couple days of opening. One person dared to put it on the level of Taste Unlimited...which made me have to try it. I got the La Havana. By far the best Cuban I have ever had. Staff was friendly and service was faster than I would have expected due to the complexity of the sandwich. Spot on place.
Just experienced the curried chickpea fritter sandwich w/ potato salad. Both were delicious! My only suggestion would be to make the curried chickpea fritters and option with a salad. I can’t wait to try other menu items. Especially breakfast!
My friend, Tom Meeks, suggested we go there since I was in the city. What a treat! We were there for breakfast. I got the ham, brio and jelly biscuit. Didn’t know they would be together but how wonderful! I could not eat it all. Everything is made from scratch. The biscuits were serious biscuits! They have been there for about three months and have a faithful clientele. We met the owner who is bright, energetic and visionary. They are located in Jackson Ward on a street that will one day explode again with business. Salt and Forge will aid in that explosion. They are open for breakfast and lunch. Go visit. You will go again.
Delicious breakfast. Chicken filet was perfect, slaw was amazing...and don't even get me started on the gigantic biscuit with apple bourbon jam. Great service, great music. Overall fantastic!
Great food from great people. Beautiful space. Can’t wait to go back for breakfast!
Delicious breakfast, charming environment, professional staff. Great asset to RVA!
Good people and great food. And that bald owner is quite the looker!

great food, service, & location! the asheville chicken biscuit is everything and they’re open on MONDAYS
I had an awesome first experience. The turkey and blackberry sandwich was super fresh with unexpected crunch and sweetness. I look forward to making my way through the rest of the menu! Welcome to RVA!
Food is delicious! Loved the atmosphere, I think it’s a great addiction to the neighborhood. Loved getting the chance to meet David and Melissa! We’ll be back soon!
Awesome customer service and the food is delicious! I will be back for sure!
Excellent coffee/Cafe! Hip and modern decor with fast and friendly service! We entered during a morning rush but were still served with a smile and received our food very quickly! We both ordered the bacon egg and cheese biscuit and I must say.... this was probably the most delicious biscuit I've ever had! Absolutely perfect in composition and taste, perfect texture and temperature! This is the type of place I am going to crave and definitely come back to when I'm in town! Coffee is delicious though it is a darker roast! Great overall experience! I'm happy we tried this place! Good prices for GREAT food! Hit it out of the park!
Was looking to get a salad for lunch and I heard this place was pretty good. This location is in downtown Richmond so you may have to drive around a little bit to find parking. I was able to get a spot about a block and a half away. This was a Wednesday afternoon right around 12 noon and the place was pretty packed. To order you walk up to the front counter they have little menus on the front and then large Blackboard menus up above. You make your order, i got a salad and bottle of water, about $15. They'll take your name and then you can go find a seat, they'll bring your food to you. They have a number of community tables, so as long as you can find some open chairs you have a place to sit. I sat at the little bar style table at the front of the restaurant looking out. I heard my name called and waved down the server and they brought me my meal on a paper plate. I got the chef salad which I thought was really good. They had homemade croutons which were pretty large and I liked the dried cherry tomatoes. It comes with a buttermilk ranch dressing which was pretty tasty. All of it was nice and fresh, the lettuce was super crispy. It was really tasty, the only downside of it is I didn't think there was quite enough of the meat. I typically get the chef salad at Kitchen 64 which is probably about double the size of this one. But that's probably the only thing about the salad I could complain about. They have a number of different sandwiches and also serve breakfast. I definitely would come back again and probably try one of their sandwiches.
I was in Richmond for only one day, but this was actually the highlight of my trip. If I lived in the area, I would go out of my way to come to this location often. I had the Asheville Chicken, and it was amazing. The biscuit was warm, buttery, and almost crumbly fresh. The chicken was juicy and flavorful, and the sunny-side up egg was gooey and fulfilling. The biscuit sandwich is huge and will definitely leave you filling satisfied. The coffee was a nice complement and perfect for getting a good start to a long road trip. Would definitely recommend!

Excellent food, great service, but overpriced. Pictured here is the chicken biscuit and avocado toast, and both were super fresh and delicious! The pickled red onions were a great feature.
The food pictured (plus another coffee not pictured—just a hot drip coffee and a cold brew) cost $25 plus tip.
My visit to Salt and Forge was highly anticipated due to my love for biscuits. To save you time, Salt and Forge exceeded my inexcusably high expectations. The simple menu includes the spectrum of sweet to savory biscuits covering everything in between. I chose, the Chicken Biscuit - breaded or grilled chicken, hot honey and pickles, and I added a side of whole grain mustard - which was refreshing they had, on a dense, yet flaky biscuit. The Chicken biscuit was made to order, so I didn’t mind the short wait. When the biscuit was delivered to me, I noticed a side of grapefruit. Upon further examination, it was a grilled sugar crusted grapefruit, which was an amazing start to my biscuit pleasure train journey. After whetting my appetite with the surprisingly delicious appetizer, I chomped into my breaded chicken biscuit. Oh Boy. Once I had the biscuit and chicken in my mouth, everything almost melted. The juicy chicken chuck danced playfully with the bits of biscuit, honey and mustard as my molars smashed it all into pulp. Every bite was equally as orgasmic as the first. It’s thirty minutes since I took the biscuit train to Pleasureville and I don’t think I’ll ever be the same, at least enjoy another biscuit as I just have. I encourage you to hop on board and see for yourself.
Wonderful! We've been twice now and HONESTLY I like just the plain old biscuit and jam but my husband loved the biscuits and gravy. Cannot recommend it enough - so good!
Okay THIS place gets one of the rare, uncommon, and unlikely 5 star reviews. I was wandering around downtown Richmond, VA in the July heat. Speaking of which, as I wandered I imagined the stifling heat of July 1863 in the aftermath of the Battle of Gettysburg and the fear the citizen of Richmond must have felt once word of the Southern defeat reached their ears. At any rate, as I wandered the urine soaked streets of downtown Richmond, I was set upon by a gnawing hunger and sought to slake it. Enter Salt and Forge. This is one of those places that made me glad I suffer from wanderlust. I stepped off of the run down sidewalk and into a clean, modern, quaint little cafe and was immediately greeted by the lady behind the counter. After a few moments of lovely conversation and an invitation back for breakfast the next morning, I placed me order. I tell you now sir, I was not disappointed. The sandwich and bacon potato salad was superb. The service was quick and excellent. I highly recommend this restaurant.
First time coming here and my coworker and I were thoroughly impressed! We visited around 1245 and the place was busy, but not overcrowded. I ordered the chicken bacon ranch sandwich and my coworker ordered the curried chickpea sandwich - both were seriously delicious. Coming back soon!
Great tasting sandwiches made fresh with quality ingredients, what more could you want in a sandwich joint? Lots of high top tables in an industrial-chic decor. Parking is on-street only. Staff was friendly.
Wonderful place to go to. Located off 2nd street in downtown Richmond, it is a great place for biscuits!! They are huge and have a great taste, not dry and cooked throughly. There are many different combinations with biscuits for breakfast and lunch. There are other options without biscuits as well like salads. I would highly recommend coming here and will come back to try more off the menu. PS-love the music as well!!
