Par is my favorite hangout. Great atmosphere and friendly crowd. Bartenders are highly trained and fast. I love that smoking is only allowed outside on the patio now. The pizza is made fresh and served late. You have to get there early on the weekends to get a seat. After dinner in Clayton we always hit Par!
Always fun and laid-back. Never actually eaten food here, but the bar service has always been great.
Mostly undiscovered. Except for Saturdays and maybe Fridays, Par is often practically deserted. With two circles of sofas, several tables, and a lengthy bar, on weeknights Par is perfect for an intimate date or an outing with friends where you can actually hear each other talk. On weekends you'll still be able to find a seat and there's a good chance your group can even claim some sofas, but it's more hit and miss and don't expect to hear anyone beyond your own sofa.
As for the drinks? The beer selection is nothing to write home about, but will satisfy most drinkers with a range from mass-marketers like PBR and Budweiser to domestic specialties like Fat Tire, Blue Moon, and Schlafly and imports like Guinness. None of the gourmet 750mls here, but even snobs will find something. The specialty drink menu is well-edited and well-mixed, with the "Uncle Bobby" (blueberry vodka and lemonade) making my list of favorite cocktails in St. Louis. It's even served in a pint glass with just the right amount of ice, making it a terrific deal AND delicious.
The best deal around, though, is the top-shelf stuff, in particular the scotch. My favorite scotch connoisseur informs me that their best scotch is not only quite good, but dramatically underpriced. Check it out if you're itching to try some better stuff while not busting your wallet.
Oh, and one more reason to hit Par on a weeknight: there's an all-night happy hour Monday through Thursday, featuring $1.50 PBR, $2 Bud, and $3 wells. Are you sold yet?
