The other reviews are spot on. I was craving some no nonsense, straight to the point good eatin’. Meat and potatoes. Germans do that pretty well.
Our usual haunts are Old Heidelberg or Checkers Old Munchen with their trusty German fare and excellent decor. Last night, the food Gods nudged us towards this joint.
While we were pulling up into the plaza we were slightly disappointed and upon entering the restaurant, we were slightly skeptical and began doubting some of the good reviews we read because it’s not much by way of a restaurant setting. It’s a few tables thrown together in a rather bland, minimally decorated room but boy, we were in for a surprise.
The chef and the hostess both are extremely pleasant and friendly. We were personally greeted by both, albeit because it was slow on a Sunday evening.
Ordered the Bitburger - excellent as always.
Apps:
1. The goulash soup was a show stopper. It was an amazing precursor to good things to come.
2. 2 sausage platter - terrific!
3. Potato pancakes - on point.
4. Bread plate - excellent.
The roast pork, sausage and schnitzel main course. Absolutely outstanding.
The sauerkraut and red cabbage - some of the best I’ve had.
The Apple strudel and the drunken cherry with ice cream was above and beyond and sealed the deal completely.
The key take away points were this - the food - each and every dish tasted like home cooking. Authentic, absolutely fresh and very very tasty. Sorry old Heidelberg and checkers - this is the new bar to beat.
I don’t say this too often but thank you chef! You truly put your heart and soul into the food and I could taste it in every bite.
What a great find! Don't judge this place by it's no-frills interior and hole-in-the-wall location. Chef Rene in the kitchen is preparing some seriously good eats. Classic German-Austrian Cuisine was exactly what I was expecting. Fresh baked bread was complimentary and delicious. Comes with their house whipped butter, which has an interesting flavor profile to it, with some cheese and spices blended in. I started with the Escargots, served in a hot crock with plentiful minced garlic and a butter-stock broth. Would have been even better with some crostinis, but another slice of the fresh bread was sufficient. The escargot was cooked perfectly and tasted great. Ice cold Acqua Panna mineral spring water from Italy (my favorite) was a perfect palate cleanser before the main dish arrived. RUN don't walk to try Rene's Schnitzel!! Pounded in house, hand battered and breaded, and lightly fried to perfection - this was the fluffiest and most moist schnitzel I have ever had! I went with the Schnitzel Holstein, sans gravy, served with a fried egg on top. Personally, I would have enjoyed two eggs, and maybe even gravy on the side, but I'll ask for that next time. Frankly, I could have downed two of these bad boys, as the portion size is relatively modest (not small, but definitely not large), but I was thoroughly satisfied. The waiter suggested that I try the Apple Strudel, and I obliged. The strudel was a disappointing finish to an otherwise good meal. Limp pastry, skimpy apples, served with a spray of canned whipped cream, and a drizzle of flavor-contradicting Hershey's chocolate syrup. Next time I'll go without and simply savor the flavor of the Schnitzel instead. All in all, a great West side spot for excellent Schnitzel, and this foodie will certainly be back!
Had a wonderful meal served to us by Stephan. Our party of four had the pork schnitzel, sauerbraten, wienerschnitzel, and Jaeger schnitzel. All of the food was wonderful. The sauerbraten was some of the best I have had. The spaetzle and red cabbage were phenomenal. Very flavorful cooked perfection. Don't let the small size fool you. This is good food at a reasonable price. Thank.
