My wife and I, after a very long week, tried the Gaslight Tavern for a drink. We love the so-called neighborhood bars, not too pretentious nor too fancy. For example, we're huge fans of The Wonderland Ballroom and The Good Silver. And the Gaslight was a terrific revelation. The hosts were super friendly, the service cozy, and the spaces... well, the patio is quite incredible: it's basically a secret pearl in the middle of U Street noises.
Drinks? We had some rosé wine, the Calvados 75 cocktail and... a wonderful Negroni with Hendrick's, which was one of the best I've ever tried. Cheap ($7 for the Calvados), good and very well prepared.
Food? We tried the shrimp cocktail, so fresh and juicy, and the superb cheeseburger, probably one of the best in DC (I can say without any doubt that, for me, it's better than the Proper Burger of Duke's). You can reach the heaven for $14, which is a reasonable price (finally!!!) for a great burger in DC. Go, go, go.
Lovely bar! The cocktails are fantastic, the staff is great, and the vibe is so cozy!
Met a few friends here for happy hour. Sat out back. Couldn't sit fully outside due to the rain. Overall the place has a nice ambiance, old school tavern feel. Happy hour drink selection was rather limited, but what was on the list was good. I liked the cocktail choice and my fiancee liked the wine options. Food was very tasty, but it would have been nice to have a few options on happy hour. Regular cocktails were a mixed bag. I really liked the Aviation, while the Old Fashioned wasn't my favorite. Service was great, very friendly and attentive. Overall an enjoyable time, we would certainly go back.
