Our very favorite restaurant! Delicious Persian food, great atmosphere, reasonably priced, and the staff treats us like family.
Highest recommendation!!!
Good Clean Eating! Delicious! Delicious! Delicious! Highly Recommended!. I travel all over the state of Florida for work which affords me opportunity to sample cuisine from many restaurants across the state, everything from five star to hole-in-the-wall local eateries. Generally I try to avoid chain restaurants preferring independent restaurants... And I find it a touch more difficult to find unique, independent, fresh and delicious cuisine in JAX compared to, say, south Florida. Anyhow I have a fair sampling to compare and I would say Cafe Kabob is definitely top notch.
This is a very small place tucked into a strip mall behind McDonald's on the Philip's highway side of Baymeadows, with maybe about 5-6 tables. But it is clean, well lit and inviting (bathrooms are clean and nicely kept as well-- a key evaluation criteria IMO). The staff is very friendly and personable, with quick and attentive service. The folks here are true Persians home cooking food they know and love, and it shows.
We ordered the dinner for two (can't remember the name) which at $28 is a great deal and enough to feed two people. It came with two salads, delicious "green" stew consisting of beef, red bean and greens, two platters of genuine saffron basmati rice and four kabobs-- one chicken, two ground beef, and one top sirloin. The meat was fresh, cooked perfectly and well seasoned. The hostess informed us the meat is delivered fresh daily, never frozen, and I believe it. My wife had the tomato/cucumber salad which she said was just 'ok'. My salad of fresh organic greens with house dressing was fantastic. For appetizer we had the plain humus, which was fresh and tasty. I make a lot of humus that people rave about, this was better. The chef gave us a complimentary dish of the basil humus, which we found to be even better than the plain. I was afraid the fresh basil would overwhelm the humus but not so. They also offered a complimentary dish if the herb/cheese appetizer. The herb/cheese appetizer is a bit odd for the American pallet the consisting of fresh mint leaves, raw radish, raw onion, pita and feta cheese... But it works and was a nice change.
Desert was their version of fresh made Neaploitan which was very good (I bought one to take home for having with morning coffee) and not over sweet.
We both loved the food ... Freshly prepared, just delicious, and a good deal at about $42 before tip for two adults, and with enough leftover for lunch.
Overall, I give this restaurant high rating and would definitely recommend. Jacksonville needs more restaurants like this, and I hope enough people go there to keep the in business. I find it quite disheartening to see the local "feeding troughs" overflowing nearly daily while these folks were not filling 5 tables on Saturday. So just go!
Thanks for reading!
Small, hole-in-the wall place, unpretentious and casual. Mounted TV playing sports, the interior is brightly lit. The food is delicious and quite reasonably priced. Unfortunately I cannot remember the name of the scrumptious appetizer we had (it was sort of like chicken and potato salad and peas mixed together) but the chicken and kufteh kebab were perfect. I am not Persian but my wife and in-laws are and they gave it their seal of approval.
