Stopped for lunch in what I can only describe as a Cuban greasy spoon round the corner from my office. I've walked past it a couple if times and decided today to try their 'roast pork with rice and beans.'
I'm pretty much the only non-Hispanic in here and most conversations that going on are, like the terrible pop ballad soundtrack, very not in english. Dark, dingy, cramped and with wobbly stools, I get why most office workers round here probably haven't ever been in here.
They are of course missing out! Tender, juicy pork, less cut than torn from the joint in hearty chunks; with nuggets of crisp slightly chewy skin strewn about; covered in the tangiest hot sauce I've ever eaten and some kind of green salsa that majors on a allium flavour to the extent that I think I may have to eat an entire pack if chewing gum before speaking to any of my colleagues this afternoon; a garnish of fried plantain adds a comfortingly sweet note; whilst the bed of starch is generous, homely in its spicing and a perfect foil for its rich toppings.
That, plus una cerveza for around $12! Hell yeah!
