PHENOMENAL CUISINE! Farm to table organic devine. Warm, friendly attentive staff. Small, cozy and inviting bistro. Menu changes daily love this concept. Sweet Potato bisque layers of flavor and the perfect start to our meal. Handmade fettuccine with kale and idiazabal cheese - unbelievable. Salmon with goat cheese and turtle bean puree - the flavor combination was so remarkable I kept going back to my husband's plate for another bite! Desert oh my goodness, chocolate torte with strawberry sorbet --so creamy and luscious and so full of flavor, my husband doesn't normally eat chocolate and he kept coming back for bites. And the lemon chiffon cake a dream! Lightest cake ever with a taste that puts you over the moon. The coffee was also magnificent. The love in this place was felt all around. From the personal touches in the decor, to the taste of each made to order dish and the friendly non-overbearing staff.... I felt so special during my visit. It was the perfect experience, cuisine at its finest - perfect meal at a new perfect place. I can't wait to visit again and try more of the mouth watering creations. This place will continue to bring me back to Norfolk!
Service and cuisine were excellent in this small bistro, only about two dozen seats. If you are reading this...then call to see if they have any seats tonight...as they want you to have an excellent experience, not crowded and without long waits.
Our watermelon/beet/feta cheese salad and cheese plate were ample and hand prepared to exquisite beauty. The roast duck and vegetarian spaghetti in light mushroom-cheese sauce were splendid in looks and taste. The creme brûlée was just the right consistency, like a soft Camembert rather than a pudding. The only fault I have is the wine list by the glass was very limited and not as broad as it should be. Some domestic big reds (cab or Petite Sirah blend) and Chardonnays would be appreciated. The white and red wines which were recommended were quite satisfactory, but not our favorite tastes.
The service was perfect, and I rarely use that word in a review. Our server MacKenzie is trained to explain the menu thoroughly, and at each course she goes out of her way to once more describe the dish.
If you enjoy fine cuisine in a small intimate atmosphere with personal service, but a limited menu, then by all means dine at Chartreuse Bistro. By Norfolk standards it is expensive, but by international standards it is quite reasonable, figure $70+ per person including a glass of wine.
We went to Chartreuse Bistro for lunch a few days ago and it was so good that we went again today. The food here is of an extremely high standard - much more typical of a very high priced restaurant in London or New York. It was certainly vastly better than anything we have had elsewhere in the US so far (incl. Seattle, LA, Palm Beach, DC). The setting is very simple (even austere) and not at all luxurious or "high end", but the food is magnificent.
It is well worth a visit and highly recommended.
